Saw this via the Lost Remote. The Times Union in Albany, New York wrote an article about how with the audience fragmentation increasing (hello cable, Internet and maybe the video iPod), one of that market's TV newscasts could go off the air.
This is something a professor of mine, Dr. William Loges, taught me in the mid-90s. He related it to the TV market Baylor is in - Waco, Temple & Killeen. Even back then, it was predicted smaller markets like this one could end up with one large news operation and that would be it. But now you might want to scratch out the word "big" after this environment of corporate downsizing.
The time frame for these changes is unknown, but it could be around the corner. It just depends on how busy Google, Steve jobs, IPTV developers and others I don't know about yet become.
