CBS Miami unveils AR/VR augmented reality-virtual reality

CBS Miami WFOR is ready to debut its cutting-edge AR/VR (augmented reality/virtual reality) studio on Sunday evening, redefining the way sports and weather are presented in the market.

Texas TV viewers will recognize names such as Shane HintonLiz RoldánHumberto Hormaza, and Suzanne Stevens, who work/have worked for the CBS-owned station.

Sports anchor Mike Cugno will introduce the groundbreaking technology.

Later that night, chief meteorologist Ivan Cabrera will deliver live weather updates from the AR/VR studio, followed by a special “March Madness” segment from the Sports Desk.

Starting Monday, March 17, CBS Miami’s NEXT Weather team will incorporate AR/VR technology into daily forecasts Monday through Friday.

“We are committed to pushing the boundaries of storytelling and delivering an unparalleled viewing experience,” said Kim Voet, president and general manager of CBS Miami. “By integrating AR/VR technology into our broadcasts, we are redefining how South Floridians engage with news, sports and weather.”

Throughout the NCAA tournament, CBS Miami will continue integrating AR/VR-enhanced segments into newscasts, utilizing the “March Madness” package available to all CBS stations. This innovative storytelling tool, “Center Court,” will bring the tournament to life like never before. As teams advance, an interactive bracket will evolve in real time, showcasing key matchups, standout moments, and player profiles in a visually striking format.

“CBS Miami is the sixth of our stations to launch this innovative technology. This cutting-edge approach allows us to bring stories to life in a way that is more immersive, dynamic and visually compelling than ever before. We are thrilled to be at the forefront of this evolution and can’t wait for our viewers to experience it firsthand,” added Jennifer Mitchell, president of CBS Stations and CBS News and Stations Digital.

CBS-owned stations nationwide are embracing this next-generation technology, particularly in weather reporting. CBS Bay Area has pioneered a state-of-the-art AR/VR weather set, delivering unparalleled clarity and insight in forecasting. Stations in New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Colorado are also leveraging AR/VR to enhance weather coverage, providing audiences with more engaging and informative reports on the conditions affecting their communities.
