Dave Ward on KTRK abc13: "They seemed like they really wanted me to make my exit."

Hoffman: Dave Ward feels ushered out of KTRK abc13 + FOX 26 coverage of Ward

Dave Ward

Last week I first reported that Dave Ward was leaving KTRK abc13 (and could appear on another Houston TV station eventually).

Yesterday, Houston Chronicle columnist Ken Hoffman dropped another Ward related bombshell when he wrote Ward feels he's been ushered out of the Disney/ABC Television Group station.

Here is more from the Hoff's interview with Ward:

"They took me off the 10 p.m. newscast two years ago. They were taking me off the 6 p.m. news at the end of this year. So I would not have an anchor role anymore."

With no anchor duties, Ward said he felt like Channel 13 was showing him the door.

"They seemed like they really wanted me to make my exit. I always thought I would continue to anchor the news at Channel 13 until I thought I couldn't do the job anymore. I'm not there yet. My research is very good, and our ratings are very good. They won't give me an answer why I'm being taken off the 6 p.m. news."

According to Ward, if he stayed with Channel 13, he would "maybe host the Livestock Show and Rodeo parade or the July 4 fireworks. That just didn't interest me at all. READ MORE

That news also made it on air over at FOX 26 KRIV's political show “What’s Your Point?” Video below:

  1. Dude...you're 77 and you're already gravy training the 50th year on air to feed your massive ego. Truth is, you should've retired years ago when you already had lost your edge.
Do you have no friends or family outside of the Ch 13 studios that are willing to withstand you and your huge ego during retirement?
Dignity and class called...they're waiting for you to leave the building and join them for a ride into the sunset.

    1. I guess, unlike your father, you need to retract your opinions now and then? Based on your other comments, I'm sure this was a dumb one as well.

  3. Owen needs to get his **** cold-cocked & punched!

Dan: Owen doesn't have any friends or family because he's a LOSER!

    1. The truth sometimes is hard, but necessary, to hear, Pops. And you know I'm right.

    2. Steve this guy has no clue as to what really goes on over there, just a very disgruntled individual who is afraid to comment under his own profile.

    3. Steve, Owen does not exist, it (being Owen) is a figment of someones feeble imagination, meaningless posts.

    4. What exactly do you do, besides ride your dad's coattails and legacy, and parade your ignorance on message boards?

  4. Hopefully KHOU, KPRC, or KRIV, or maybe Houston PBS station could be showing interest in hiring Dave Ward... seeing that KTRK appears to be going in a new direction. If Ward is unlikely to land a major news anchor role at a competing station, I could see him working wonders in hosting a weekly public affairs shows, new news analysis/commentary segment, and/or fill-in anchor/freelance reporter. It's a thought.

    1. I think he's positioning himself for a money grab and an age discrimination lawsuit. Despite the fact that he's not brought his "A game" for over a decade.

    2. Owen who sucks plenty, my dad was on the station until the day he passed away at 85, still drawing interest today 9 years after his death. So hush your mouth and reveal your real self or just keep sucking plenty, who cares. You apparently know nothing about ratings.

    3. Your dad is my hero. He is one of the few reasons I'm in this business. As Dave would always say, Thank you, Marvin! Dan you are a lucky man.

    4. Why, for heaven's sake? The gentleman is three years shy of his eightieth birthday.

    5. Thank you. He never planned on retiring, of course the ball was in his court with the only lifetime contract ever signed by a media guy so they could not get rid of him plus the public needed someone in his role. The management at 13 would have let Marvin go long before he passed away if he could have, that is just SOP over there.

Dave on the other hand still has much to contribute to Houston media regardless of age.

  5. I think that sucks. I was enjoying growing old with Dave. He started the year I was born and I was hoping I would get several more years of watching Dave.

  6. This is a great lesson to channel 13 employees. If they can do this to Ward, the face fo the station what will they do to you? Heard they already fired people this week too.

    1. Every television station works like this.
If they want to get rid of you they either 1) don't renew your contract or 2) change your job duties to something you don't like so you'll quit on your own.

If they cut you loose, they have to pay out your contract.
If, however, you'd like to walk away from it, they will graciously let you out of it.

  7. I for one have not noticed any slip ups with Dave Ward's delivery, he seems to be doing just fine even after 50 years. I HAVE however noticed that Channel 13's newscast constantly having technical issues almost on a daily basis.

  8. They did it very recently to the legendary Deborah Wrigley who had been there for years. They just don't care about their people. Channel 13 is going down the hill and fast.

  9. I knew it! I suspected that he was forced out, and sadly, he was. Dave, if you are reading this, you are the best anchor than any news station could ever ask for. How dare they kick you out of the station that you literally helped build? They wouldn't even tell you why they showed you the door at 6pm. You have done more than any other anchor to make channel 13 #1. Clearly this is age discrimination, and they should have never even thought to let the best anchor in TV news go. There was never a day that I thought you didn't do a great job. Dave will see KTRK go downhill with the reporters/anchors that can't read or pronounce words correctly, and the lovely breaking news with no details at all.

If you ever watched the 10pm recently, you would notice that it took a completely different direction: No hard-hitting investigations and a lot of silly filler stories.

They did the same thing to Deborah Wrigley. KTRK should be ashamed of themselves.

  10. Hmmm... they did the same thing to Ed Brandon-among others-over the years. I'll bet Bob Allen saw the same thing coming. One can only hope Disney treats general manager Henry Florsheim the same way for these decisions when the ratings tank.

  11. Crazy what the News business is coming too. Dave has been an ICON with KTRK. I was just a baby when he started reporting and still a young one when he started doing news casts.

But a lot of good people let go or just left and rather than be put out there was fired just said was retiring. Bob Allen then went on to KHOU for a year or so before his cancer took him away from station and still have not replaced there even. I wish he could come back as no one knew sports way he did or delivered the way I liked.

But sure when the team starts getting too old they want to go young or something else. Just like in baseball some teams these days dumping the old players for youth.

But whatever Dave does in 2017 am sure it will be something good.

I have not watched KTRK much since a lot of people I liked are no more or really as Dave being pushed out.

But as said age and nearing retirement or over retirement time to move on. Want Illona and such taking over that do 6:30. Makes me wonder will Gina be next being dropped from 6 and go back to the Full combined one hour and not have a split with 2 different staffs doing the time period.

I loved even Ed Brandon then he had his issues and came back but time caught up with him.

I loved Marvin watching him till he passed. I watched Dave more or less with Sharra till her health took her away and then seeing her back on Radio anyways.

But a lot of what I liked with KTRK is no more.

I could say worse with KPRC

KHOU still getting used to all their anchor changes and other changes.

  12. I wonder if it was the channel 13 people that wanted him gone or the Disney people...

    1. Channel 13 management has been making his life difficult for a few years. After news director Wendy Granato took control he was taken off the 10pm news within months.

  13. Big question is whether we'll see him at Fox 26 ?

  14. Dave is done. He's news reader. That's all. His features are not all that hard hitting anymore he is showing the wear of years. (I will add that I have watched Dave since 1966, I preferred Ron Stone, still remember Dan Ammerman, Larry Rasco and some of the other dinosaurs. I don't watch Dave now.) Drawing interest because people are used to seeing you is not a reason to keep someone around on television. Granted the talent level at Channel 13 has dropped but let's face it, the age getting the news via television is ending. The only way they try to keep interest is with all the "Breaking News" flashes, which just an excuse for poor reporting. All of the major stations reporting the news are cutting staff because of drops in viewership. It's simply his time to go. Sayonara Dave

  15. Before we go....

Actually, Dave....I think KHOU is telling you it's time to go!

  16. Dan Zindler and others need to get real. If Walt Cronkite, Wayne Gretzky, and Jack Welch can retire, so can Dave Ward. The only difference is these guys knew when it was time.

  17. I will more than likely be changing channels when Dave gives his final newscast. I can't blame him for leaving and wish him the best. I am not a fan of the "Ken and Barbie" show at 4 or at 6:30 and don't watch those newscasts anymore. In reading the posts above I have to agree there is way too much "Breaking News". Every newscast starts with it no matter how mundane it is.

    1. I agree completely. Ever since KTRK got the new graphics package, the got rid of calling stories "update", "latest developments", or "new details". The opted to call anything new "breaking news" instead. Also, I never liked the news at 4pm or after they split the newscast at 6:30pm.

Dave deserves better. He should have never been relegated to such a silly position of hosting a parade or fireworks, instead of a newscast.

  18. There is a certain symmetry to Ken Hoffman writing the article. Both he and Dave Ward have been mailing it in for many years - although Hoffman really never was much in the first place.
