KTRK abc13 sweeps May 2016 sweeps

KTRK abc13 dominates most TV newscasts in May 2016 sweeps period

We've seen May 2016 sweeps ratings results from Telemundo Houston and FOX 26 KRIV, now KTRK abc13 sends us its television viewing numbers and clearly the Disney/ABC Television Group station is happy with the good results as you will see below.

The second group of numbers below come from comScore (formerly Rentrak) - a newer way of rating TV viewing. These are KTRK's comScore numbers from April. The May numbers are still coming in with this service and are not totally tallied yet. KTRK has gone on record in the past on how it is a big backer of comScore's TV viewing measurements.

  1. Clearly they lost the 10pm news. You don't see that mentioned here. They also lost the key demos in the morning.

  2. I guess every station skews the numbers to make them more favorable to themselves. It seems like they all win for some time period.

    1. True, but you can clearly see by this data that KTRK won the important demographics. No skewing there.

  3. What in the world happened to KPRC? They were riding a waive of wins for a little while only to fall back down to #3 and sometimes #4. I never thought they deserved the wins in the first place as their news is still terrible but this is a huge swing. And Ch 13 needs to do something about the 10 o'clock news it's not good. Either make Eric or Art the anchor with Gina, because the Gina, Ilona and Eric is not working out.

    1. I moved to the area 20 years ago, I've always watched KPRC news at 5, 6, and 10. Not so much, recently, though. Here's their nightly news schedule: "Breaking News" of a shooting or a fire or something similar. Then there will be a report about a shooting, a fire or a robbery, then another, maybe a little on Trump and possibly the other candidates, and then a story about a dog. And of course, "Happy Talk." I love dogs, but I don't think that, out of 15 minutes for news, 3-5 minutes on a dog story isn't a huge waste of time. Maybe once a week, we get a good investigative report on malfeasance and corruption. Perhaps that's why their numbers have fallen?

    2. Scott, thank you for that insight as I haven't watched channel 2 in years. They've always been way too sensationalist for my taste. I do remember that they used to be very heavy on investigative reports (they weren't necessarily hard hitting, more just sensationalism) about 2-3 years ago. I'm surprised to hear from your request that they have stopped that. Anyway, who do you find yourself watching now during those timeslots? It's always been a toss up between 13 and 11 for me.

    3. Where does it say that KPRC is third and fourth? They are lower than second only in one slot. I for one will wait for Nielsen.

    4. Maybe you missed the first section that has the breakdown of viewership provided by Nielsen, KPRC ranks 3rd and 4th behind KTRK, KHOU and KRIV in several timeslots in the important key demos.

  4. Watching 13's gymnastics routine in an attempt to spin the numbers is quite entertaining.

    #1 at 5am! (...with women)
#1 at 5:30am! (...as long as you exclude Fox 26 completely)
#1 7-9am (...as long as you exclude Fox 26 completely).

Excuse me, I'm getting a little dizzy over here.

  5. All of these stations, Channels 2, 9, 11 and 13 are losing it. Sunday when we had an active shooter situation in West Houston and there was no live information about it on television. Chan 2 was showing the French Open and finally broke in with a quick update then went to the French Open. Chan 11 was playing Informercials (WTH??) and couldn't break away. Chan 13 was doing the Indy 500. Apparently the Indy was sacrosanct and couldn't be violated, not even to warn citizens to stay away from the area. Nine was doing whatever they do. None of the stations lifted a finger about this incident until Chan 2 broke in and started alerting people (an hour after the shooter was dead). Why haven't we heard more about this? THe Emergency broadcast system is set up for kind of stuff. All of the local stations in Houston have broken their trust with the city.

  6. KTRK is also using a bit of smoke & mirrors. Comscore uses data generated from your cable or sat tuner. Despite saying they have demos, the box cannot tell who is sitting in front of the TV. It can only tell what channel you are tuned into. So how do they get demos? When you sign up for your cable they ask you how old you are. Com score then ASSUMES you are the demo watching TV. If your kids are watching or your dog is catching some z's in front of the TV, it still gets counted as the demo you put down when you registered your box. That's the reason why advertisers are dubious to use Comscore as currency. NIelsen, as bad as it is, uses a system that tries to identify the demo in front of the TV. Comscore does not. That's why using Comscore for demos is not very accurate.
