740 KTRH remarks on News 92 FM KROI's first day

As I blogged earlier, I woke up at 4:30am to catch the first local broadcasts of News 92 FM KROI - listen here.

Clearly News 92 FM is challenging longtime Houston station NewsRadio 740 KTRH in its promos. AM Operations Manager and KTRH Program Director Bryan Erickson sent mikemcguff.com these comments about News 92's inaugural broadcast:

"From what I heard (it was tough to pick up north of the Loop), I was surprised to hear so little local news content. They do have slick promos; I actually heard more of those than I did local news coverage. I got a kick out of several of their promos, especially the “we cover more local news than other stations” promos. In one hour this morning I counted 8 local stories in their newscasts while in that same hour we did more than 20. I guess their “No Spin” phrase doesn’t apply to everything they’re doing.

I was also surprised to hear a talk show in the 9a hour after weeks of hearing this was going to be an all news station.

There’s obviously a clear difference between our two stations – We have a strong commitment to local news coverage and compelling talk and they’re still trying to figure out what they want to be."

  1. If Bryan was a great news director he'd know it would take a while for News 92 to see who they are. Give them time.

It's also funny how he talks about "they are trying to figure out who they want to be" when KTRH has been in the market over 30+ years and they are still trying to figure out who they are.

Are they News? Conservative Talk? News -Talk? ????

They ruined KTRH... Good to hear News 92FM on the air - sounds like the old KTRH that made it famous.

  2. KTRH has no leg to stand on. Just another outlet for right wing talk. The only reason they expanded local news coverage (and it ain't much) is because now they have some competition they fear (actually the U of H-run NPR station was competing with them, and valiantly, but mainstream radio still doesn't respect NPR).

KTRH needs to lose the "compelling talk". Become a real news station. Then they'll be taken seriously again.

Also most interesting how News92FM reminds Houstonians of how KTRH USED to be.

  3. Regardless of who's right or wrong, I think it shows incredibly bad taste for KTRH to embarrass themselves, those who still work for them, and their advertisers with "Jerry Spinger-ish" comments, such as this.
    Shut up, already!

  4. That was kind of classless to make a statement like this. But then I blew off getting reasonable information or opinions from KTRK years ago.

On the other hand, I did not expect a talk show to be on....even if they had both sides represented. Do we really need more opinion on the radio?

  5. Why is everyone hating on KTRH? They DO news. You can't say they don't cover news. It's ridiculous. Erickson gave these comments honestly and as a business man. News 92 was slamming KTRH all morning with their promos. Who's being classless? A new station shouldn't be slamming competition. They should just stick to trying to improve what, I heard this morning, a train wreck.

  6. "From what I heard (it was tough to pick up 740 under bridges, near tall buildings or in my house), I was surprised to hear so little local news content. They basicly read the headlines from the Houston Chronicle. They (740) do not have slick promos; I got a kick out of several of their(92) promos, especially the “we cover more local news than other stations” promos. Every fifteen minutes I would compare the content between 92 and 740 and 4 out of 4 times 92 was delivering news while 740 had conservative talk radio on. 92 even had content that local TV did not have. That's the way to run a real news station.

There’s obviously a clear difference between our two stations – 740 has let some fine journalists go over the years and they’re still trying to figure out what they want to be."

Thanks Bryan for your rebuttal. You know, KTRH doesn't cover news. If it was a legit news station, it would be get rid of their political agenda and cover "Houston's Morning News" with good, balanced reporting and not have that tea-party crazy scream on my dial.

Let's face it. KROI has a long hill to climb but they are doing it right. KTRH is pretty much null, at this point.

Hey, Bryan Erickson is checking in on us. ;)

  9. Props to Erickson on 2 fronts: having the nads to speak his mind at a time when most corporate suits at his level are scared to death to breath the wrong way for fear of offending someone...and for calling a spade a spade when he knows the losers that read these blogs and message boards are going to hammer him because they're living in the past and hate their misserable little lives. As KTRH afternoon talker Michael Berry would say, "How 'bout them apples!"

  10. Just remember; the KTRH haters dominate the blogs because they are just like the "Occupiers"
Out of work, frustrated and probably in need of a warm bath!

Yeah, back when KTRH had better raitings than a bunch of spanish stations. ;)

Not our fault no one in Houston wants to listen to KTRH anymore.

You gotta admit a 2.6 ratings share is pretty pathetic for a radio station that prides itself on being the radio station of Houston.

Or are the KTRH fanatics really that delusional?

  13. I listened to news 92 all the way to huntsville. That signal comment is a lie.

  14. Over 20 million in annual advertising revenues; apparently advertisers like it.
They probably don't count; they have jobs, right?

  15. There are only KTRH haters on this blog. It's sad to be quite honest. The new station sounds like an old 70's news station. I'm waiting for Ron Burgundy to pop up. Oh wait, that's J.P. Pritchard.

  16. Note to Bryan: You're sounding as unprofessional as you possibly could. We've met several times when I've been at the studios to tape and interview various hosts. You struck me as a decent guy. You're making a serious mistake with your public dissing of a new competitor. It makes you and KTRH smaller. You're number one in the news and talk field. ACT LIKE IT! As for 92 FM, I hope you guys make it. Your success would be good for Houston.

  17. For a guy who really doesn't consider the new station a threat to his "heritage" station, that's an awfully loud " hurt dog" screech he's putting up! BTW: "Heritage" in this case means Walter Cronkite, Dewey Compton, Bill Zak, Morris Frank, Steve Edwards, and other greats. To use it in reference to Sean Hannity, Michael Berry, et al is a bastardization of the word.

  18. It's no different from 680AM in Toronto. I've been to Toronto Canada several time, and it's seems like a carbon copy of it.

  19. That's funny, Bryan, considering that I tuned into KTRH and heard the same old regurgitated crap that has tainted your once reputable station. And you're one to talk about their content?

Oh, and it warms my heart to know that you've been spotted in public looking visibly shaken and frail. A sure sign that your new competition is getting to you. And good for them.

May you rot in your corporate greed, Mr. Erickson.

  20. It speaks volumes about Clear Channel as a whole that they haven't put a leash on Bryan Erickson and told him to shut up. He's making a fool of himself, and showing the public what all of his employees already know about him. If I were his boss I'd yank him into his office by his goofy balding head and tell him that he either shuts his mouth now, or he's fired. End of story. What company lets their managers run wild and make a mockery of their company on public blogs? Oh, right, Clear Channel does... But if a regular employee says something on Facebook, they're quick to discipline them. So what makes Opie so special? His bad teeth? His fake attitude? His complete disconnection from his employees and the industry that made him? Whatever the case, Clear Channel is failing to reign in this shallow and unethical goofball.

I bet Roger Hudson wishes he could write on this blog too, but that would require him knowing how to spell. And God forbid they had someone running their news department who was able to communicate.

Who knew Bryan was such a comedian?!?!

  21. There is one ex KTRH employee commenting on here. For a lying, untalented joke of a man who can't hold on to anything, he certainly has many things to say about a station that just because he couldn't live up to the expectations of a talented news station, and is now starting at the bottom again in his 30's.

  22. Things are getting ugly on here! KTRH has clearly done wrong by many people!

  23. KTRH hasn't done wrong by people. They got rid of dead weight.

  24. I don't see how you can say that when several people who work at news 92fm were never fired by ktrh. Bonnie and Scott moved onto bigger markets before coming back down. Listening to KTRH this morning I can tell you for a fact 92fm has better sounding talent.

  25. I like the new news station but I don't agree that they have "better sounding" talent. Most of the reporters on KTRH have a lot more personality in their voices than the seasoned veterans at News 92. It surprises me. I don't want to be put to sleep listening to the news and unfortunately, News 92 has done that to me on more than one occasion.

  26. Not impressed with News 92 so far. They didn't live up to the hype that they created. KTRH will end up prevailing.

  27. Funny, I live outside of the loop and actually hve no experience listening to News 92 inside the loop. Came in loud and clear.
