KPRC 2 owner says station needs to improve

KPRC 2's parent company is Post-Newsweek (and ultimately the Washington Post). In a recent shareholders' meeting Post-Newsweek CEO Alan Frank says his group's largest market station, KPRC Channel 2 is under performing:

Perhaps Frank's biggest challenge - save the rocky economy - was looking for a way to reinvigorate a struggling KPRC in Houston. Showing a slice of humor, he said: "You all know from (Presidential candidate and Texas governor) Rick Perry that Texas is a state that's doing better than most in (these) economic times, and so there's a lot of money to be made, and particularly in Houston, and we were not performing as we might." READ THE REST

I think there is a consensus in the Houston TV community that KPRC 2 has been trying to figure out its identity in the last decade after shedding the tabloidish image it relished in during the late 1990s.

Other interesting notes from Frank featured in this MediaPost article, is that Post-Newsweek stations will extend its station live streaming within the next year and experiment more with social media.

  1. Perhaps the problem lies with Mr. Frank himself, a dinosaur by today's standards:

"Frank, who joined Post-Newsweek in 1979..."

Mr. Frank is a fan of management shake-ups, bringing in new GM's and ND's on a whim, thinking that's going to change everything. In fact, his latest venture brought the past VP of News for Post-Newsweek to Houston as the ND. She's been kicking around Detroit (and hanging out near his office) for years. Do you really think she's going to have new ideas??

The problem is his leadership style - no vision, and those he hires who have vision (Larry Blackerby) leave for other pastures when they realize Mr. Frank is living like it's 1979.

  2. Mr. Frank hit the nail on the head if this morning's circus of a show is any barometer. Conflenti's childish and annoying yelps and hollers off camera are asinine and should have been stopped years ago -- he's flat out pathetic. Lauren Freeman can't read, and her Jim Halpert-like expressions and robotic hand gestures when speaking are annoying. The recent add of making Anthony and Jen sit so near the camera and have dialogue before they do weather and traffic is hoirrifying. Reyna SHOULD NOT be allowed to be that close up to a camera - scares my kids and my cat. And her traffic reports are like a 3rd grader's book report. Replace everyone besides Anthony / Mary / Haley in the morning and KPRC will be started in the right direction. Then, they just have to deal with the redheaded diva and their gaggle of inept reporters. Each day that passes reminds me of how good Phil Archer is, and how much Jerome Gray is missed.

  3. Sounds like The Deuce needs a NewsFix.

  4. Anyone catch Mr. "Wish I Was Cool" Conflenti talk about the woman who gave birth "30,000 miles in the sky" today?
She was on a plane, Dock Boy. Not a Space Ship. One more reason Ch 2 is in need of an overhaul. Too many errors each day.

  5. A couple of days ago Jennifer said "refugee", instead of "refuge". I could not stop laughing!I only watch 2 when I need a good laugh and they never disappoint.

  6. Step #1 towards reinvigorating is to cut loose the following 11 dead weight employees, and then replace them with intelligent and qualified professionals: Bauer, Clanton, Conflenti, Dutchin, Freeman, Guzman, Jaquez, Marshall, Reyna, Sachse, and Taghi.

  7. I always have to laugh at the people that want to nitpick when on-air people flub a line.
We, as their co-workers, sometimes tease them about it, but honestly I'd love to know how many of you armchair quarterbacks have never made a mistake at your job.
I'm not talking about catastrophic, world-ending mistakes, but simple typos when you're filling out reports.
Now try reading those same reports aloud to thousands of people every day and let's see how long it takes before you make a mistake.

Yeah, these people are professional readers but they're still human and, therefore, not perfect.

  8. stop bashing the morning show!!! it is their only newscast that is remotely competitive.

  9. It's beating KHOU and KRIV Fox. That says something!

  10. i tried calling kprc to gripe about their classless on air product. i was met with a pre-recorded phone system of dominique sachse's voice and i hung up immediately. she's the worst and that was the last straw for me. khou all the way now.

  11. I ABSOLUTELY agree with the above post... the person who posted the armshair quarterback post... every single word of it. Half the people that post on this site about the sites are UGLY, FAT and DUMB as SARAH PALIN. It's easy to sit in your cozy chair and critique anchors and reporters about what they do. Meanwhile you're making $10 an hour and peeing on yourself at home. SHUT THE F*C( UP!

  12. Reghardless of whether you like her politics or not, Sarah Palin is attractive, slim and intelligent.
Anon 12:40 must need glasses. And not rose colored ones. And Anon 12:40 likely is the misguided troll who continues to promote the lie on this Blog that Ch 2 has talent.

  13. Obviously, Post Newsweek sees a problem with KPRC's performance so I imagine changes-a-plenty are coming. Also, I love reading the above post about how we shouldn't be quarterback hating, and then that same poster hates on Sarah Palin and everyone else who doesn't agree with their line of thinking. Hypocrisy at its best.

  14. Read theline right after the Mike's excerpt stops:

"Newscasts had lost momentum, but a company-wide focus has returned them all to second place."

    Sept ratings just finalized yesterday:

    6am A25-54
    KTRK 2.8 / KPRC 1.8 / KHOU 0.9 / KRIV 1.2

    10p A25-54
    KTRK 3.2 / KPRC 2.5 / KHOU 2.1 / KRIV 1.9

KPRC is already #2. Has been throughout 2011.

  15. The ratings took a big dive at Khou! Wow but i did notice it began when Lucy left and Vicente left the mornings. Ron obviously ignores everyone in the morning. He's not the right fit. That blonde tries to be friendly and he just looks the other direction. It's uncomfortable. In the evening, I'm not a shern minn fan. Maybe their new hire will help. But no one can replace my Lucy Noland!

  16. Amazing...Fox 26 is dead last in all categories.
Sounds like they're the ones in need of a management makeover!

  17. look again ... 26 is beating 11 at 6a

  18. I'm not a big believer or follower of ratings. Dave Barron and others have shown they are not all that scientific. At the end of the day, I know what sucks. And KPRC's tabloid approach and mix of inept and implanted suck. Give me any other channel. Heck, give me a week old newspaper and I'm more informed and up to date than with KPRC.

  19. What was with Reyna's hair at that High School gym this morning? Not a good look....

  20. if they would stop spinning EVERY story, and just simply report the news instead of pushing their liberal agenda maybe channel 2 would have a chance.I havent watched channel 2 since the days of Ron Stone, and Jan Carson. Now THERE was real reporting. Those two didnt waste time shoving their opinions at viewers, they just simply reported the news.Of course back then the station wasnt 100% liberal either.used to have great shows like Eyes of Texas with Ray Miller, now its drowning in these stupid BS "reality" shows.KPRC used to report what happened, unlike today, where all they do is talk down to their viewers.Even though ALL houston news is from a liberal view,I find KTRK and Dave Ward the least offensive of the bunch.otherwise I just watch 13 for local news/WX and FNC for national/world news.funny,(isnt it?) that THESE 2 stations are #1 across the board.Just shows me once again that people have had it with the liberal spin.

  21. For whatever reason the " viewer perceived credibility" seems to be missing. Sorry to criticize but the current KPRC direction just doesn't have it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Agree with the "viewer perceived credibility" comment. But then again, they have no on air employees with credibility, so why would viewers perceive any?

  23. Wow, What an honor. At 11:15 on the 24th Dana Carvey made a guest post as Grumpy Old Man. Welcome to the blog Dana.

  24. The owner is right - it does need to improve. But giving Reyna more air time is not the answer. Radar the Weather Dog was more entertaining...heck, Radar could do the traffic better.

    ReplyDelete
  25. How is Reyna getting more air time?

    ReplyDelete
  26. re: Reyna airtime... Am guessing since there were multiple commericals on Ch 2 over weekend showing her acting like a school girl and implying she'll have a larger role in morning newscast -- at least until the bleached blonde arrives to take over at 5:30 or so.
Speaking of ol Jen, did anyone catch Curious George as she called Owen "Anthony" this morning? I mean, calling him "Ally Oop", "Geico Caveman" or "Troglodyte" I can understanbd...but not Anthony.

  27. Jen is to anchoring news what boxed wine is to wine; what White Owl cigars are to Cuban Cigars; and what Ashlee Simpson is to singing. HORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIBLE.

  28. I can totally understand the news and what is going on no matter who is reading the teleprompter. However I would much rather look at Reyna, Sachse, Guzman ( Ooo Daniella!! ), Freeman, and Jaquez doing it . KPRC has the hottest on air atlent in the city...Hands down!!

  29. Anon @9:53, Sunday's Chronicle has coupons for Pearle Vision and other eye doctors. Use one of them, then you'll rephrase that post and write:
"How did I ever look at Rover, Spot, Gus (Ooo Doggie!!), Fido, and Jack doing it."
