I produced the Hometown Live segment which runs in the 4 pm news on 13 for several years. During that time, I learned about a lot of great stuff that you can do on the weekends in the Houston-area.
So cue the Beatles "Day Tripper" as the wife and I head to Lake Houston and La Porte? Yes I wrote La Porte. It's near Deer Park, home of Andy Pettite, but he actually has nothing to do with this story. (click here to see the pictures)
First Lake Houston. A quick trip from Midtown to the East Belt landed us in a little forrest, which is refreshing when you live near downtown. We hit the park and found buffalo? Yes, buffalo! We made our way across the trails to the actual lake, just watch out for the alligators when you get there. The water was tranquil and lots of folks had their poles and bait wating to catch the big one. It was surprising that we didn't see that many boats. Anyone know the reason why?
Over to the kiddie area, we found an enclosed pond and grassy field full of geese and peacocks. Interesting combination, but they both enjoyed the bread we brought to feed them.
Next we took the Beltway to Deer Park. Even though I am a native Houstonian, this was the first time I've taken the Lynchburg Ferry. After that two minute trip, we hit land and were at our dinner destination, the Monument Inn.
The Monument Inn from what I understand is the premiere place to dine in La Porte and that was obvious by the crowd. There is a banquet hall on the bottom level and the restaurant is on the second level.
We were seated by the window so we could see all of the barges cruise across the water. Believe it or not, the refineries looked like a big city off in the distance. The food was not bad at the Monument Inn but nothing to write home about.
Overall, I would say it was a great day and would recommend it as a quick trip to get out of the hustle and bustle of H-town. Comment here if you have a day trip suggestion in the Houston-area.
