NewsWest 9 anchor Victor Lopez battling stage 4 colon cancer

Victor Lopez wakes up the Permian Basin every morning on NewsWest 9 KWES Midland, and now is looking for a little sunshine in his life as he battles stage 4 colon cancer.

“I was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma stage 4A colon cancer,” Lopez said on the KWES website. “Being told that you have cancer... it makes you just get a whole new mindset and look at life.”

Seven months ago, Lopez received a life-changing diagnosis. What began as a routine checkup quickly escalated with the discovery of a large tumor in his colon and a lesion on his liver.

In October, Lopez underwent surgery, followed by the start of chemotherapy in November with 12 rounds in total. He hopes to complete his chemotherapy by June.

According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and the fourth leading cause in women. Still, it’s the second most common cause of cancer deaths when numbers for men and women are combined.

Lopez began his career with NewsWest 9 as a reporter in 2007 and was promoted to an anchor in 2011.

Throughout his career, he’s been recognized by the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters, and he takes pride in being part of the 2011 “Best Morning Show,” as voted by TAPB.
