Angel Covarrubias has departed his role as news director at CW39 Houston KIAH mikemcguff.com has learned.
He joined the station in February 2022 from Pollen Media Lab in Austin.
Covarrubias took over the position after Scott Fitzgerald left earlier this year to become Southwest Regional Sales Manager for Vizrt/NewTek.
Before Pollen Media, Covarrubias served as Regional News Director for Univision affiliate KNVO McAllen, Fox News South Texas KFXV Harlingen, Univision affiliate KORO Corpus Christi, and Univision affiliate KLDO Laredo.
Covarrubias also worked on-air, having been an anchor and reporter for CBS Austin/Telemundo Austin KEYE and a reporter for News 4 WOAI in San Antonio. He previously anchored the 5, 6, and 10 p.m. newscasts for Local 23 KVEO in Brownsville.
In Laredo, Covarrubias worked as executive producer and anchor for Univision affiliate KLDO and Fox News South Texas KXOF, eventually rising to the role of news director.
His television career began at Action 10 KZTV in Corpus Christi, where he worked as a news editor, photographer, and reporter.
Covarrubias studied at the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Del Mar College.
