Javier Guerra joined KRGV 5 Rio Grande Valley as its new co-anchor for Channel 5 News This Morning in July 2024.
The journalist, who was raised in Rio Grande City, will co-anchor with Sandra Rodriguez and Meteorologist Cecilia Gutierrez and take over for the departing Trey Serna.
"First of all, we all are going to miss Trey and all the amazing job he did every morning to Channel 5 News This Morning," Channel 5 News Director Zoltan Csanyi-Salcedo said in a statement. "Yet, we are very excited to have Javier, who like Trey, is also a Valley native join us and be a part of our amazing morning team. Javier brings his experience having worked mornings in Corpus Christi along with his enthusiasm to be back home in the RGV. So I know he will complement Cecilia and Sandra very well as part of the most watched morning news in the Valley."
Guerra comes from KRIS 6 News in Corpus Christi, where he has been a morning anchor since June 2024. He joined KRIS in June 2020 as a multimedia journalist and was later promoted to weekend evening anchor.
“I’m excited to get back and reconnect with the community," Guerra added. "Being home doing what I enjoy is truly a blessing and I am excited to connect with all four counties across the RGV. The Valley is a unique place, unlike any other, and I am genuinely happy to be back and closer to family and friends.”
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley grad got his TV start with Fox Rio Grande Valley KFXV where he was an MMJ and later evening anchor.
