Hormaza takes over for Chris Pruitt, who left in February for Nexstar Media Group sister stations FOX 49 KRBK and KOZL 27 Springfield, Missouri.
"I’m very grateful to Nexstar for giving me this opportunity and I’m excited about relocating to Houston," Hormaza said in a statement. "As an affiliate of the CW Network, I’m looking forward to the new entertainment programming coming this fall to KIAH-TV’s air, and to the myriad of live sporting events we will broadcast, including NASCAR Xfinity series racing, WWE NXT wrestling, and more ACC college football and basketball games. This high-quality programming, combined with Nexstar’s commitment to local news and its ability to create unique cross-platform solutions for advertisers and marketers, gives KIAH-TV and cw39.com a distinct advantage over its competitors in the market. The team in Houston also has established a legacy of service to the community, and I can’t wait to join them."
Hormaza comes from the President and General Manager role at FOX61 WTIC and CW20 WCCT Hartford, Connecticut, where he has been since March 7, 2022. While at the TEGNA stations, Hormaza oversaw the launch of a new hour-long local newscast at 6pm, the new FOX61+ streaming platform and the station rebranded as "Connecticut’s News Station."
From 2014 to 2021, Hormaza oversaw Univision’s broadcast properties in Orlando, Florida, holding the positions of Senior Vice President and General Manager at Univision 26 Orlando WVEN, UniMás Orlando WOTF, and radio station The JOY FM, WNUE 98.1. Under his leadership, WVEN expanded news coverage by 90 minutes per day, introducing the morning show "Despierta Orlando" and the mid-day show "Edicion Digital Orlando."
Hormaza's career began in 2003 as an account executive for CBS Miami WFOR and WBF 33, the Miami CBS-owned and operated stations. In 2007, he was promoted to Business Development Manager, overseeing new business initiatives and managing social media marketing efforts, resulting in over $1 million in incremental revenue.
"Humberto’s talent, leadership, and experience make him the ideal candidate to head Nexstar’s broadcast and digital operations in Houston," said Ron Romines, Senior Vice President and Regional Manager for Nexstar’s broadcasting division. "He’s proven himself capable of directing the efforts of a large-scale operation and is adept at driving revenue, ratings, and profit. He understands what viewers and advertisers need and what will resonate with different audiences across multiple media platforms. I am very much looking forward to working with Humberto as he guides KIAH-TV and cw39.com to even greater success."
He attended Miami Dade College.
