NBC 5 DFW provides live coverage of 'Opal’s Walk for Freedom'

NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth / KXAS will provide live coverage of the Juneteenth celebration Opal’s Walk for Freedom on Monday, June 19, beginning at 11 a.m. CT, which will be hosted by NBC 5 Anchors Deborah Ferguson, Laura Harris and Brittney Johnson. NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 / KXTX also serve as sponsors of the historic Juneteenth National Independence Day event in Fort Worth led by Dr. Opal Lee, known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth."

Viewers can watch Opal’s Walk for Freedom on NBC 5, over-the-air Channel 5.1, and stream on NBCDFW.com and the NBC 5 app, as well as the station’s 24/7 local news channel. The coverage will also be presented live nationwide on LX News, and streamed on NBC Dallas Fort Worth News available nationwide on The Roku Channel, Xumo, and FireTV.  Audiences in North Texas can also stream the channel on Samsung TV Plus.

Opal’s Walk for Freedom features a 2.5 mile route that starts and ends at Fort Worth’s Evans Avenue Plaza, a distance that represents the 2.5 years it took for enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation to reach Texas. The event was founded by Dr. Lee – a 96-year-old social activist, Nobel Peace Prize nominee, retired teacher, and counsellor – to advocate for Juneteenth to be a National Day of Observance.

Dr. Lee’s tireless work was rewarded when the bill was signed into law by President Biden on June 17, 2021, recognizing Juneteenth as a federal holiday. By continuing her work to spread awareness about Juneteenth, she is helping to ensure that future generations remember the past to bring unity and progress into the future.

Opal’s Walk for Freedom is produced by Unity Unlimited, Inc. and powered by Heal America.
