Jason Wheeler provided an update on April 2, 2022 via Twitter, concerning his absence from WFAA 8 Dallas since early March:
"I injured my back pretty badly in a boating accident many months ago, and I finally went and got that surgically taken care of.
And in the weeks since then, I have been recovering slowly but surely.
Anybody who's been through back surgery knows that it can be a doozy.
I just wanted to let you know that I've been seeing the messages on social media. Sorry that I haven't responded to everybody individually. I've been just really trying to limit my time on social media as I've been recovering.
But so many of you have sent well-wishes and thoughts and prayers, and I really wanted to tell you that I appreciate that. It's very encouraging. So thanks again for that.
Some people have also been asking, are you ever going to come back to work again? And yes, that is the plan. We're probably looking still at mid to late April before that is actually a possibility. But yes, it will be here before we know it.
Again, thanks for all the well-wishes and for checking in on me. And I'll see you soon."

Wheeler tweeted in on March 1, 2022, that he wouldn't be anchoring or reporting for WFAA 8 Dallas for the next months potentially.
"Just left that place for a long while.
Gonna be out to take care of an injury.
Leaving behind some recordings, but won't be back live again till sometime in mid to late April at the earliest."
Besides working as an anchor/reporter, Wheeler is also editor of "Right on the Money," and co-host of the "Y'all-itics" Texas political podcast.
The Texas City native and University of Houston grad joined WFAA in 2012 from CBS Austin KEYE where he was the 5pm anchor and host of "Austin Live."
Wheeler also worked as an anchor/reporter for WFOR Miami and KENS 5 San Antonio.
Before that he was a reporter for WPGH 53 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and CBS 4 KDBC El Paso.
