Angel Covarrubias joins CW39 KIAH as the Nexstar Media Group station's news director.
"Thank you Chris Pruitt and Nexstar Media Group, Inc. for the opportunity to be the first Hispanic to lead an English affiliate in the market," Covarrubias posted to LinkedIn. "The team in Houston is sharp, focused and ready to push for more. Houston here we go!"
Does this mean more news is coming in addition to the NO WAIT WEATHER + TRAFFIC morning news and abc13 KTRK provided 9pm newscast? Stay tuned.
He takes over for Scott Fitzgerald who left KIAH earlier this year to work as Vizrt/NewTek's Southwest Regional Sales Manager.
Covarrubias currently works for Pollen Media Lab in Austin.
Covarrubias's last Texas TV management job was as Regional News Director for Univision affiliate KNVO McAllen, Texas/Fox News South Texas KFXV Harlingen, Texas/Univision affiliate KORO Corpus Christi and Univision affiliate KLDO Laredo.
Before that, Covarrubias was in front of the camera as an anchor/reporter for CBS Austin/Telemundo Austin KEYE.
Prior to Central Texas, Covarrubias was a reporter for News 4 WOAI San Antonio.
Ahead of the Alamo City, Covarrubias was the 5, 6 and 10 anchor for Local 23 KVEO Brownsville.
Before Brownsville, Covarrubias was an executive producer/anchor for Univision affiliate KLDO and Fox News South Texas KXOF Laredo. Eventually Covarrubias was promoted to news director.
Covarrubias's TV career started in Corpus Christi where he worked as a news editor, photographer and reporter for Action 10 KZTV.
Originally from Monterrey, Mexico, Covarrubias attended The University of Texas at Austin, The University of Texas at San Antonio and Del Mar College.
While starting his television career at an early age, it turns out Covarrubias had been around radio stations and newsrooms since the age of 11, because of his father who also works in broadcasting.
