Samantha Mesa joins Local 5 WOI

Samantha Mesa left the morning and midday anchor desk at CBS 4 KGBT Rio Grande Valley (Nexstar) for Local 5 WOI Des Moines, Iowa (Tegna) in June 2021.

“I am thrilled to join the high-caliber team at Local 5,” Mesa said on the WOI website. “I’m looking forward to getting to know the Des Moines community and calling it home. For me, journalism shows the heart of our communities and our lives, and gives us the opportunity to find solutions to problems. It gives us the ability to record history and give context to changes and challenges we face, especially in these unprecedented times.”

In November 2022, Mesa joined the "Good Morning Iowa" team as co-anchor with Chenue Her.

Mesa worked for KGBT since 2018 as it was acquired by Nexstar from Sinclair.

Before the RGV, Mesa was an anchor/reporter for WHAM Rochester, New York where "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" should be the newscast theme music. Period.

Mesa started her television news career in Texas as the breaking news morning reporter and anchor for KRIS 6 News Corpus Christi.

She earned a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism with a bachelors from the University of Colorado.

According to her bio, Mesa received a scholarship during her time at the University of Colorado to study abroad in Morocco and Tunisia during the Arab Spring Uprisings which led to her report "Women’s Voices Will Be Heard."
