Univision cancels some weekend newscasts, announces job cuts

Univision layoffs and furloughs announced, cancellation of Saturday newscasts

Univision has announced layoffs and furloughs for station employees.

In a statement, Univision tells mikemcguff.com:

Despite Univision’s strengths and recent growth momentum, the coronavirus pandemic has caused a significant contraction of business amongst our advertisers that has a direct impact on our business. While we have made every effort to protect jobs during this time, due to these economic circumstances, we have made the difficult decision to take a number of cost containment actions across the company including restructuring our teams and reducing our workforce across all divisions and functions. We believe these actions will help us emerge from this global health crisis in the best and strongest position possible so we can continue to deliver essential, uninterrupted content to our loyal viewers and continue serving the Hispanic community.

Sources tell me the company has discontinued Saturday newscasts at its owned stations such as KXLN Houston, KUVN Dallas, KWEX San Antonio and KAKW Austin.

Saturday network news, local Sunday newscasts and local community affairs programming will still air.

The stations will continue to broadcast weather updates and breaking news cut-ins.

I heard Saturday evening newscasts did not air in Houston nor San Antonio last weekend.

While TV leaders have said TV is seeing a huge resurgence during the pandemic, other companies have also cited lack of advertising support.

For example, TEGNA announced coming furloughs in early April.
