HOUSTON, TX – (October 12, 2017) – Telemundo Houston / KTMD and the Houston Texans presented Houston Independent School District with a $10,000 donation to benefit the school’s “Leyendo con Telemundo” (Reading with Telemundo) literacy program. Tony Canales, President and General Manager of Telemundo Houston presented the donation to Jorge L. Arredondo Superintendent East of HISD on Tuesday, October 10th during an in-studio event. The donation from KTMD and the Houston Texans will support reading initiatives for local students on four HISD campuses that participate in Telemundo Houston’s reading initiative.
Telemundo Houston’s President and General Manager, Tony Canales, was one of 32 individuals honored across the country by the National Football League (NFL) with a “NFL Hispanic Leadership Award” and presented with a $2,000 grant from the Hispanic Heritage Foundation to benefit a local community organization. Canales was distinguished for his dedication to Houston’s Hispanic community and
Telemundo Houston’s support of local literacy programs at Houston’s local public schools. Canales, along with each NFL award recipient can select an organization of their choice that serves the local Hispanic community to receive the donation. The Houston Texans awarded an additional $8,000 and with their support, Jorge L. Arredondo Area Superintendent EAST will receive a $10,000 donation to
benefit reading programs for students in 3rd and 4th grades.

The NFL and its teams celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month 2017 with a series of special events, including the seventh annual NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Awards. The awards recognize the contributions of Hispanic leaders in each NFL market. Each award recipient is recognized at a game or event in their local NFL market.
