'Texas Standard' debuts on Houston Public Media News 88.7 KUHF

"Texas Standard" daily news magazine, airing on Houston Public Media News 88.7 begins March 2 - will connect Texans to stories around the state and globe

"Texas Standard," a new daily public radio news magazine, is a joint project by Houston Public Media's News 88.7 KUHF, KUT Austin, KERA North Texas and San Antonio’s Texas Public Radio. The show debuts today at 1pm on KUHF.

My immediate question was, where is "Fresh Air" with Terry Gross going? The station tells me "Fresh Air" will air at 8pm following the encore presentation of "Houston Matters." The current strip of programming that airs at 8pm will move to 9pm (this includes "Living on Earth," "TED Radio Hour," "This American Life," "Bullseye" and "Dinner Party Download").

Also, "Science Friday," is affected by this change. "Science Friday" will move to an evening broadcast, Friday’s from 10pm to midnight. Finally, Monday through Thursday, the BBC World Service will begin at 10pm and continue through the overnights.

Here is the full press release on the new show:

Houston Pubic Media News 88.7 radio listeners have a new source for expansive coverage of state, national and international news — from a distinctly Texas perspective — with the launch of “Texas Standard,” the daily news show of Texas, making its debut in Houston at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 2, 2015.

The one-hour daily news magazine is a project of Houston Public Media, KUT Austin, KERA North Texas and San Antonio’s Texas Public Radio.

This cross-station collaboration — the first of its kind among public radio stations in Texas — provides a platform to connect Texans to stories from communities across their state in the same way NPR’s “Morning Edition” connects listeners to stories from communities across the U.S. and around the globe.

“We are excited to collaborate with KUT, KERA and Texas Public Radio in bringing our listeners even more quality content from a statewide perspective,” said Lisa Trapani Shumate, executive director and general manager of Houston Public Media. “It also creates new opportunities for us to share the insightful reporting of our award-winning News 88.7 team by contributing Houston's news and viewpoints with listeners across the state.”

Hosted by award-winning journalist David Brown, “Texas Standard” explores the world of news, economics, innovation and culture, every day — from a Texas perspective — in a fresh, contemporary, conversational style.

“Our intent is to be fresh, original and groundbreaking,” said Brown. “We believe that reporting marked by wit, humor and informality can uplift and underscore our shared humanity, while helping us understand the world around us.”

Prior to his work with “Texas Standard,” Brown founded and hosted the award-winning cultural journalism unit "Texas Music Matters," produced by KUT Public Radio. He is known nationally for his work as host of public radio's “Marketplace.”

"Texas Standard" will air immediately following News 88.7's local talk show "Houston Matters," hosted by Craig Cohen. For a complete line-up of Houston Public Media's news and information, arts and culture, and education programming, visit houstonpublicmedia.org.
