KHOU 11 announced today on Facebook that its sports anchor Bob Allen has been diagnosed with cancer. The Houston CBS affiliate reports it's a form of T-Cell Lymphoma and Bob is very encouraged about his chances for recovery.

“I’m ready for this—and I’ll beat it,” Allen was quoted on the post.

Allen has been a fixture on Houston's sport scene since the early 1970s when he joined KTRK abc13.

He stunned everyone when he left channel 13 in 2013 and went across the street to KHOU 11 where he has been ever since.

On a personal note, Allen is one heck of a nice guy and obviously a sports icon in the Bayou City. He's seen it all and been there to tell us about it.

UPDATE WITH KHOU PRESS RELEASE:

KHOU 11 News Sports Director Bob Allen has shared that he has been diagnosed with cancer. The cancer is a form of T-Cell Lymphoma and Bob is very encouraged about his chances for recovery. When he talks about facing this challenge, Bob displays the same confidence and optimism Houston television viewers have come to expect from him over the past four decades as the city’s leading sports anchor.

“I’m ready for this—and I’ll beat it,” Bob says, adding that he appreciates the support and kind words coming his way.

During his treatment, Bob will be taking an extended leave from his on-air work at KHOU 11 so he can focus all his energy and attention on getting well. He’ll keep viewers posted on his progress and KHOU 11 will make sure all the people who know him, trust him and care about him have the latest word on how he’s doing.

“Bob is a fighter—he’s never backed away from a cause or an effort he believes in,” says KHOU 11 Executive News Director Philip Bruce. “Now his cause is beating cancer. And my money’s on him.”

For now, you can share your thoughts with Bob on KHOU.com and on our Twitter and Facebook pages, using the hashtag, #GETWELLBOB.
