KPRC 2 launches noon newscast

KPRC 2 expands mid-day newscast from 11am to 12:30pm with only hour and a half block of news in Houston

Thanks to one of my eagle-eyed blog commenters, we learn that KPRC 2 has launched a new noon newscast today with anchor Andy Cerota and meteorologist Britta Merwin.

That means the Houston NBC affiliate now has an hour and a half news block for the mid-day slot, since it already has an hour long 11am show.

KPRC now leads the mid-day news war in terms of amount of news offered.

As far as the rest of its television schedule, KPRC now airs:
- The Insider at 12:30pm.
- Days of Our Lives remains in the 1pm slot
- The Meredith Vieira Show moves to 2pm.
- Dr. Phil stays at 3pm.
- Then comes more news with KPRC 2 News at 4.

So how long till the other Houston stations copy this news increase? It might be hard to offer a news counter since the other stations could be more constrained by their particular network schedule and demands.

That's a wrap folks! 1st @KPRC2 noon newscast with kprc2 Britta Merwin is in the history books. #kprc2

  1. All the news stations do is report the same stories over and over, never anything new unless something breaking, then it's covered ad nausea. And the commercials...long breaks and frequent.

  2. I hope it doesn't include the incompetent Jen Reyna or Bleachy Freeman.

  3. Wonder if will last or is just something to finish out a time slot as Queen was cancelled so had to do something with her time slot as running reruns was not cutting it. So moved Meredith. So had to do something with the noon timeslot hour. So when Fall comes will they change again. Myself was liking them with Ch 13 just at 11 to 12 and Channel 11 by itself for Noon time. But Channel 2 has to break barriers and more

  5. I'm sure it'll stick around if it does ok in the ratings and, if not, we'll see syndication in that slot this fall. If they were 100% committed to the newscast, they would have issued a news release and done some promotion, don't you think?

Also, for the record, while Andy seems to think this is their first-ever noon newscast, they did, of course, have a noon newscast for decades before sliding it to 11 a.m. KRIV also had a 12:30 p.m. newscast for a number of years before switching to noon.

    1. Andy stated "1st @KPRC2 noon newscast with KPRC2Britta." So he was accurate.

It is even more accurate if his implication was "my first noon newscast with Britta." Although, I am not sure if that's what he meant.

  6. Noon Newcasts are the lowest rated and in the big picture are not important.

    1. Big question is whether it'll be successful?

  7. It's cheaper than syndication. Just re-run stories from 11am while using the same staff. There is big audience tune out so they won't notice the repeat. It could beat KHOU and KRIV.

  8. Andy would be better off on the 4 P.M. news. Channel 2 always gets killed in the ratings at that time slot. They should have made that move a long time ago.

    1. Agreed. Have Andy do 11a, noon and 4p.

    2. Bill "Kenny Rogers Wayne Newton Mickey Rourke Dom Sachse Joan Rivers" Balezza needs to retire. So does his ARPA dyed red haired sidekick.

  9. Jennifer Reyna is most certainly to be promoted to full time 11am anchor(But still will do mornings) and Lauren Freeman to full time noon anchor(But still will do 4pm newscast)

    1. That's too bad. Between the two of them there's a lot of ego & plastic surgery, but not an ounce of talent.

    2. If that happens, Courtney Gilmore should do traffic in the weekday mornings!

    3. The comedy of errors known as Jen Reyna's poor news reading continued today. Someone should advise the former Rhodes Scholar and renowned atom splitter that you don't pronounce "Hyundai" as "Honda"!

    4. I had decided that there was no point in responding to your predictable bashing of Sachse , Reyna and KPRC, but I just have to ask one last question: Since you have been posting the same nastiness for the last four years, why not switch channels? If I felt that way about a TV station's personalities, I could not be paid millions to tune in. But then again, it would depend on one's mental condition, wouldn't it?

    5. Why do you assume it's one person posting? It's not like this town overwhelmingly likes any of them.

    6. Someone, based upon a few cranky posts I've read in the past few days, doesn't seem to realize there's more than one "Anonymous" on this blog. It's not all the same person.

  10. KPRC has switched roles between Jennifer Reyna and Lauren Freeman, Jennifer Reyna is now a weekday 11am anchor, But she will continue to do traffic in the morning, And Lauren Freeman is now a weekday 12pm anchor, But she will continue to do the 4pm newscast.

    1. Big mistake. Reyna has proven over the past 2+ years that she is incapable of reading news. Lauren is just annoying. They should have never let Irika go. And they should bring in some outside talent to the anchor desk.
