KHOU 11 growing viewers in May 2012 sweeps

KHOU 11 has let me know things went for the Belo owned station during May 2012 sweeps:

"May delivered momentum for KHOU 11. While the majority of other stations showed year to year declines among the A25-54 demo, KHOU maintained or grew viewers. In fact, at 10pm, KHOU was the only English language newscast to experience growth over the last year in the all-important A25-54 segment. When it comes to households at 10pm, KHOU is just 2/10th (0.2) of a HH rating point shy of the #1 position (KTRK 6.1, KHOU 5.9, KPRC 4.7).

In addition to the 10pm news, other standout newscasts include KHOU 11 News at 5a, 4p and 6p. In these peak periods KHOU is ranked #2 – a solid showing for the 4pm newscast in particular, which is still less than a year old. Another bright light, KHOU’s morning news is up among A25-54 and showing growth compared to other station numbers that are either flat or down from the previous year."

  1. They had to dig deep into the ratings to find that stat. KHOU had a lousy book. The only two stations that should be celebrating are KTRK because they're still number 1 and KPRC because they're up significantly in all dayparts in both households and demos and rank ahead of KHOU in some key periods. If they don't make some changes soon, KHOU will be the new number 3 station in town.

    1. That demo is pretty significant. I doubt they had to dig deep for that at all. Not sure how you read this as a lousy performance....

  2. I'd like to see how they do well among young males viewers, if they are huge with them then I think Chita Johnson and Lisa Hernandez would be a big factor into those.

  3. Nice to see KPRC's brass reads the blog and is trying to spin their way out a hole. They know the real story----and recognize Channel 2 should be winning considering the demo-friendly lead-ins from NBC (The Voice, etc) as opposed to the geriatric lineup KHOU has to overcome most nights on CBS, which started airing reruns the middle of May. KTRK has legacy power going for it and the power of ABC, which always does well in Houston. Question is, can Ch 11 keep overcoming the drag of an OLD network?

  4. I bet this is because a lot of guys are going away from KPRC after Dominique's wedding and are now watching Hernandez.

    1. Are you kidding? Every story on Sachse is like 85+ percent against her and her ego; no one, except emotionally unstable people who sleep with blow up dolls, would switch channels because she got married and therefore feel they now have no chance to marry her themselves so they must watch channel 11 instead. That is the most ridiculous suggestion I've heard since....well....since KPRC suggested they hype her wedding. (and since KPRC put Reyna in an anchor chair...both were ridiculous ideas)
And, Hernandez is no looker. I'm a straight male and Greg Hurst is more eye candy than her.

I think you need to question your sexuality.

    3. I know a lot of male Sachse fans who are now somewhat cozying up to Hernandez now after her getting engaged last fall, and now more so after her marriage. This isn't something out of the blue, this is ACTUALLY HAPPENING, maybe you need to look into about this Mike!

And unlike that other poster who just posted, not they're not emotionally unstable and sleeping with blow up dolls, many of them are healthy individuals, a lot of them have women of their own.

  5. People are switching from Sachse to Hernandez not because she got married; rather because Sachse is acting like a Kardashian attention whore. Plus it's nauseating the way Balleza drools over her. Every time Sachse passes gas, Bill gets a look on his face like he just smelled flowers.

    1. No you jealous person! She's a Houston icon, so she deserves all of this attention, and unlike the Kardashians, she HAS talent!

I don't believe people are switching from Sachse to Hernandez en masse, but I think they are some.

    2. Houston icon? Contrary to her own agent's effort and the KPRC PR machine's efforts, she's bout as much a Houston icon as Paul Baco, Matt Maloney, Josh Innes or Travis Rogers.
She's not even a native Houstonian. She just pretends to be; she fakes that...like everything else bout her. FAKE FAKE FAKE.

Wow I had always heard that Jennifer Reyna was bad, but had no idea how dumb she was until now...watching ch 2 this morning, she is subbing for Zavala...guests from the Houston zoo are on with a tiny alligator...so Miss Mensa asks "what tips can you give people who have them as pets?" - The zoo employee just looked at her like did you really just ask that? ... And said "we don't recommend them as pets and recommend you just view them from a distance"....wow she is dumb...switching to cnn now...can't stop laughing.

    1. After the program, rumor is the Zoo lady said "we don't recommend Jen as an anchor and recommend she not be viewed on TV news from any distance".

    1. Pffft....there's plenty. In fact I've never heard of any fans over 60.

  8. I saw her too, Phillip. She was her usual terrible, and she looked like Curious George in a pink suit. And NBC gave us its Daily Double of hacks by having equally terrible Jenna Wolfe on the Sunday Today show afterwards. Between the two of them you can't find an ounce of smarts.

    1. You are correct about Wolfe. I was looking for the beautiful and talented Amy Robach..very sad to see she is jumping ship to ABC news. The weather girl was a looker though...didn't catch her name.

  9. Let's face it, all stations are losing viewers. As the population ages, the 18-25 set are not big viewers of TV news. All stations will lose viewers, period.

    1. Coming from someone in that age group, we indeed are big viewers of local TV news, we're just not as outwardly talking about news compared to others. That's why you get that perception.

  10. Nielsen shows that KHOU wins 25-54 MEN on most newscasts. Channel 2 is dead last in men viewers behind Channel 11 & 13, no matter what the Dominique myth may be. KPRC does better with women. KHOU really strong among all viewers 35-64, often #1. Same with total viewers of all ages. When it comes to counting eyeballs, it's a dogfight between KHOU and KTRK. But ad buyers don't care about anything except 25-54.

    1. I guess this shows that Dominique Sachse getting engaged back in October and getting married recently, has caused a slight male migration to KHOU (mainly because they have an attractive talented group of Jang, Whaley, Hernandez, and mostly I think Johnson). Daniella Guzman leaving might also be a big factor. I know I remember seeing KPRC lead in Men 24-54 last year, such events in the past year has totally tipped the scale in favor of KHOU.

  11. Everyone please take time to honor and remember our troops today...they are risking their lives every day...some fall, some return wounded...don't forget this is what Memorial Day is about...if you see one, please thank them for their service. America's finest.

  12. Anon 5/27 @11:24....you sound like an alcoholic justifying why they drink when you so unskillfully make excuses for KPRC's poor numbers.
To even suggest Diva Dom's engagement and wedding drove viewers away is asinine...KPRC has no viewers to drive away! Actually, give some credit to the few viewers they did have; the viewers who left did so because tabloid news like Ch 2 is a turn off; because Ch 2's reporters are painful to listen to; and most of their anchors are self absorbed hacks.
And the portly and monotone "Ben Stein" Guzman had no factor -- Guzman was no good, had a shelf life or 4 months before being completely irrelevant on air, and she was as much a viewer magnet as a story on paint drying.

  13. I am one of those young guys who migrated from KPRC to KHOU. I have to say Dominique getting and engaged and married and having Lisa Hernandez as her new competitor has a lot to do with it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Man when is Mike gonna make an article about the possibility of a male migration from KPRC to KHOU? The fact that many guys are flocking to Hernandez instead of Sachse? This is too much to ignore.

    1. I've always wondered about that one too. I would like for an article about this supposed migration, please.

  17. People migrating over to KHOU because they can no longer take Sachse is a dumb theory.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's not a dumb theory as many young men hate seeing Sachse as a married woman now and would want to see another single news anchor telling them the news.

    2. If Nefertiti Jaquez and Jennifer Reyna get engaged, that would be hot.

  18. I switched over from KPRC to KHOU partly due to Sachse; but mostly KPRC hypes up every news story like Armageddon is coming. If a viewer left KPRC because she got married is pretty sad…and kind of psycho in a stalker kind of way. She does get on my nerves. She always seems like she has to have the last word. And the whole hype KPRC did about her wedding; you would have thought it was Princess Di getting married. Please, she is just a news anchor. Stop with all the hype.

Yes absolutely correct. They flash "Breaking News" for everything...I think that should be a rare thing...not starting every broadcast with it.

    3. Surgueryfrique Sachse is not hot.

    4. for all of you who don't think lisa hernandez is hot - i'd love to watch you meet her in person. you'd be a hot mess, because she's both beautiful and real. she's more in the vein of lisa foronda, who is beautiful and athletic. they're both athletes and both naturally beautiful. both are easy on the eyes and the kind of women you can also drink a beer with.

so what if she she doesn't have the overblown, surgically enhanced looks of lucy nolan? talk about plastic dolls with plastic personalities. do you hear anyone at 11 bemoaning her departure?

what 11 needs to do now is replace the cardboard anchor caricature sitting next to lisa with someone more in tune and in touch with the real people around him. give her someone she can actually relate to - not some male version of a lucy or dom.
