Former KLOL DJ 'Crash' Collins, 69, has died

On the day of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame 2011 inductions, we get the sad news that former Rock 101 KLOL and Z107.5 KZFX talent Maurice "Crash" Collins, 69, has died (Crash was inducted in 2010).

His wife, Roxana Marx Collins, posted the news on Facebook Sunday afternoon:

"My beloved husband passed at 1:30 pm , Nov. 6th 2011. Keep us in your prayers. Bash for Crash will be a Memorial service and a celebration of his life....please plan on attending with our family. Time to follow for the service..."

Collins was fighting Stage 4 prostate cancer and it had metastasized to the bones according to website The site says Collins' treatment was costing $8,000 a month. A group of his friends were holding a benefit November 13th. According to Roxana's Facebook post, this will now be a memorial event.

The above photo was taken last year when I interviewed Crash for my documentary on Rock 101 KLOL (production temporarily suspended). In the interview he explained to me how he came up with his famous name.

"One day I came in to do the afternoon show and [KLOL managers] Pat [Fant] and Doug Harris were in their office and they said, 'You got a minute?'," Crash described to me. "And I thought, 'Oh no, here we go again, they're going to fire me again.' And they said, 'You need something a little bit more jazzy or something besides just Crash.' So I said, 'Well, let's see, how about Crash In Your Dash?' No, I said, 'Crash from your dash.' And Doug Harris goes, 'Crash In Your Dash.' And we all went, 'Yay!'"

Crash got the name "Crash" from his racing days.

  1. Houston had alot of great radio people, i was listening to Hudson and Harrigan when they came on air in 1967- i was seven years young. I remember all the above names and more.
    R.I.P. CRASH

  2. I worked at KLOL in the late 70's and into the spring of 1981....was "Barretta" in the "Barretta and Charlie" edition doing mornings in '80-'81. Had known Crash when I DJ'ed part-time at KLOL, and he was always funny, always helpful. You always just wanted to hang with hear his stories and have some laughs. His voice could make that drive from Houston to Austin such a blast. Just as great a guy off-air as on. My thoughts go to Crash's family and friends, and to everybody who used to crank it up on KLOL.
