The Tube MTV clone stops broadcasting

A lot of people ask me if MTV started playing music videos, would the network's ratings go up. I don't think so. Here is another point for my side of the argument.

The Tube was a great clone of old MTV and now it is no more:

Tube Media Network, a music-video station that aired on KHCW's (Channel 39) digital channel, has ceased operations and will not be replaced in Houston for the moment as Channel 39's owners examine programming options.

The channel, which appeared locally on Comcast cable channel 306 and on digital over-the-air channel 39.2, ceased operations Oct. 1, according to a message on its Web site.

"We're disappointed that they didn't make it financially," said Roger Bare, Channel 39's vice president and general manager. "We got good viewer feedback, and a majority of the viewers we heard from were in their 30s."

Sure, people in their 30s watched it because they grew up with MTV. But MTV by design has to play music for the teens and younger and they are the ones who don't care about television. It probably doesn't really matter what MTV puts on if it's not super compelling for that demo.

at least now I know why there were color bars on that channel Monday.

If you are reading this is in Houston, don't get confused with Channel 55 The Tube, that is something else.
