Help Mike McGuff fight Alzheimer's disease by doing what you love

Twenty-one years ago today, my mom died of younger-onset Alzheimer's disease.

This year, I'm the executive chair of the Houston & Southeast Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association's Do What You Love to End ALZ campaign.

Do What You Love gives you the flexibility to do whatever it is you want to fight Alzheimer's disease.

For example, I kicked off the campaign event in October with a screening of my 101 KLOL documentary "Runaway Radio" at the legendary River Oaks Theatre, featuring Outlaw Dave and Jennifer Reyna, with host Michael Garfield.

Here are some suggestions to help get your ideas flowing!

FUNDRAISE ONLY
> Use social media and your following to raise money.

EXERCISE
> From challenges to an outing on a scenic trail, there are plenty of ways to turn exercise into an enjoyable fundraiser!

SPORTS
> Bring friends, family, and colleagues together by organizing a tennis or golf tournament with registration fees that benefit the cause.

GAMES
> Pick your favorite game, like bridge, board games, Mah Jongg, or livestreaming, and turn it into a fundraiser.

PARTIES & EVENTS
> Organize a costume or dance party to raise funds to advance the care, support, and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.

ARTS
> Host a karaoke night, knit-a-thon or an art auction. There’s no limit to what you can do!

HOBBIES
> Bake cookies for your family or office in exchange for a donation, or host a fishing competition with an entry fee.

OTHER
> A graduation, holiday, or other celebration can make for a special fundraiser. Set up a fundraising page and ask friends and family to make donations in lieu of gifts.

This is not limited to individuals.  Businesses such as restaurants, all the way to entertainment venues, like escape rooms, can participate.

Reach out to me, and we can help you with ideas and guidance on getting started.

Or you can register below and get started on your own.

Dementia is a growing public health crisis in Texas. The impact of Alzheimer’s is projected to rise, according to recent data:

- 459,000 people aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s in Texas.

- 1.1 million family caregivers bear the burden of the disease in Texas.

- $4.3 billion is the cost of Alzheimer’s to the state Medicaid program.

Your dollars make a difference. Funding has helped fight the disease's side effects with recent advances. Although current medications cannot cure Alzheimer’s, some drugs change disease progression, with benefits to cognition and function. Other medicines may help lessen symptoms, such as memory loss and confusion, for a limited time.

Also, the Alzheimer's Association U.S. POINTER study recently found that healthy lifestyle interventions, such as diet, exercise, and cognitive engagement, have a powerful impact on brain health and can improve cognitive function, helping protect cognition from normal age-related decline.

Thanks,
Mike McGuff
Houston & Southeast Texas Chapter Alzheimer's Association board member

It's a mikemcguff blog 20 year celebration!

Jennifer Reyna & Mike McGuff
Jennifer Reyna and Mike McGuff

When I started writing this blog in October 2005, I thought it might last a few months.  Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think it would last 20 years.

And believe it or not, we have two events to celebrate the two-decade achievement.

I'm holding a screening of my 101 KLOL Houston documentary "Runaway Radio" at the legendary River Oaks Theatre on October 1, 2025, at 7:15 pm with the reunited Jennifer Reyna and Outlaw Dave.

Michael Garfield, “The High Tech Texan,” serves as event host.

BUY TICKETS

Notice the date? October 1st is 10-1, like the radio dial position of 101 FM! I wish I had come up with that, but the credit goes to Rob Saucedo, the Artistic Director at River Oaks Theatre!

Houston Matters with Craig Cohen on Houston Public Media just aired an interview with me about the documentary this morning!

Obviously, readers of this blog will recognize Reyna as KHOU 11 Houston morning traffic anchor and Outlaw Dave as morning show host for Houston’s Eagle 106.9 and 107.5 KHPT/KGLK. Reyna started her broadcasting career on Dave's afternoon 101 KLOL show!

In honor of Mark Stevens, my mom and Dayna Steele's mother, we will be collecting funds for the Alzheimer’s Association Houston & Southeast Texas Chapter. Even if you don't attend the screening, you can donate here.

Since our last screening, “Runaway Radio” won the prestigious Texas Independent Film Award (TIFA) – for the best film made in Texas – at the Houston Film Critics Society’s 18th Annual Awards. A special ceremony will be held in honor of the occasion at the River Oaks Theatre screening.  Previous TIFA winners include Richard Linklater’s Apollo 10-1/2: A Space Age Childhood and Sean Baker’s Red Rocket.

"Runaway Radio" features interviews with Dusty Hill (ZZ Top), Lyle Lovett, Sammy Hagar (Solo, Van Halen, Montrose, The Circle), Melissa Etheridge (singer-songwriter), Doug Pinnick (King’s X, KXM) and Carmine Appice (Ozzy Osbourne, Vanilla Fudge, Rod Stewart, King Kobra) and the KLOL crew.

The night before

To kick the party off early, the night before on Tuesday, September 30, at 7:30, I will also be at a special screening of The Gardener's Year at the River Oaks Theatre. BUY TICKETS HERE

950 KPRC AM turns 100

Today marks a century since 950 KPRC AM first took to the airwaves, beginning its broadcast journey on May 9, 1925, making it Houston's oldest radio station.

A Dallas Morning News article from June 28, 1925, reported on how WFAA radio's Charles F. Baker had been in Houston helping former WFAA engineer George Edward Zimmerman, who was supervising the new KPRC.

“Houston is a Main Street town, with the Rice Hotel at one end of the street and Rice Institute at the other," Baker told the Dallas Morning News in 1925. "Station KPRC is very pretty and convenient. The studio, on the roof, may be opened on all sides. It gets abundant air. It gets, on occasion, the roar of trains, the whistles and the bells adding realism to the station motto, ‘Kotton Port, Railway Center.’ Houston is a real ‘seaport and wonderful business city.’”

Initially transmitting at 1010 kilocycles per second (kc), the station shifted to its now-familiar 950 frequency in 1941. Its debut broadcast began with the words: “Hello, folks, everywhere.”

KPRC was founded by the Houston Post-Dispatch—later renamed the Houston Post—much like its sister station, 740 KTRH, which was later launched by rival newspaper, the Houston Chronicle.

The station’s call letters, KPRC, stand for Kotton Port Rail Center, a nod to Houston’s booming cotton, shipping, and rail industries at the time. The word "cotton" was intentionally spelled with a "K" to match federal rules requiring stations west of the Mississippi River to begin their call signs with that letter, while those east of the river typically begin with “W”.

Early programming was a mix of live music, comedy, sermons, children’s shows, poetry readings, weather updates, time signals, and news. In 1927, KPRC made headlines when it began airing police dispatches for the Houston Police Department—a groundbreaking public service at the time.

On December 24, 1946, KPRC expanded into FM radio with the debut of KPRC-FM, which would eventually evolve into today’s SUNNY 99.1 KODA.

In 1950, the Post extended its broadcasting presence into television, purchasing KLEE-TV and rebranding it as KPRC-TV. For decades, KPRC’s radio and TV operations shared facilities until the Hobby family, longtime owners, sold the stations in the mid-1990s.

Now, the station is owned by iHeartRadio, with Michael Garfield, The High Tech Texan, serving as the station's longest-running host.

Michael Garfield joins FOX 7 Austin

In a time when all we are hearing about is media layoffs, there is a bright spot to talk about and that relates to the High Tech Texan Michael Garfield adding Austin as one of his weekly TV appearances on FOX 7 KTBC with Dave Froehlich and Katie Orth.

Here is what Garfield posted on LinkedIn:

"Excited and honored to add another TV station to my content contribution list. I recently began my weekly tech segment on FOX7 (KTBC) morning show "Good Day Austin" in the technology hotbed of Austin, Texas.

This one hits home as I graduated with a Communications/Radio-TV-Film major at the University of Texas, just about one mile up the street from this heritage station.

I look forward to sharing product reviews, news, events and more in the capital city of Texas, in addition to my reports on KHOU (CBS) in Houston, and my long-running radio show in Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio.

"The High-Tech Texan" brand continues to expand and I thank you for listening, watching, and taking my advice."

Houston TV viewers can catch him on KHOU 11 as a live field correspondent with Deborah Duncan on "Great Day Houston."

AM listeners can hear him on his long-running 950 KPRC Houston radio and his recent Texas radio expansion to Talk Radio 1190 KFXR Dallas and News Radio 1200 WOAI San Antonio.

Garf will be a busy media dude as he gains more outlets for his tech and lifestyle product news and reviews. As an influencer, he also keeps his nearly 50,000 Instagram followers entertained.

KPRC 2 Houston cuts off SNL 50 special

I watched a lot of the SNL 50 anniversary show Sunday night but was called away for personal stuff.  It turns out I would have missed it anyway.

Social media chatter from angry Houston NBC affiliate KPRC 2 viewers says that the station cut off the special early and went to its 10 p.m. newscast.

Right around midnight Monday morning, KPRC made no comment on the incident.

The Saturday Night Live YouTube channel posted the show's closing segment. UPDATE: Below is the Paul McCartney performance.

It also happened to Graham Media Group-owned KPRC sister station WDIV Detroit since they are both NBC affiliates with a shared master control.

UPDATE KPRC 2 ISSUES APOLOGY TO VIEWERS:

We sincerely apologize for cutting the SNL special short. This was not an intentional programming decision; it was simply human error, and we understand your disappointment. – I know the best way to address the error last night with the ending of the Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary special is with you directly.

We sincerely apologize for cutting the SNL special short. This was not an intentional programming decision; it was simply human error, and we understand your disappointment. NBC had communicated to us Friday afternoon that the live show would run long – with a scheduled end time of 10:15 p.m. We had our technical teams ready for this planned 15-minute overrun. When the show ran even later, we didn’t make the real-time adjustments, and that’s why the final 13 minutes were missed.

What you didn’t see included a performance by Sir Paul McCartney who sang a medley of three songs from The Beatles Abbey Road album. We also missed the on-stage goodbye led by Martin Short, which included former cast members holding up a photo of Gilda Radner.

Please know we are working with NBC this morning to present an encore presentation of these moments as soon as possible. We’ll communicate that to you as soon as we know more.

We value these special moments in television history as much as you do and are taking immediate steps to prevent similar technical issues from occurring in the future. We know this information will not fix last night’s viewing experience, but we are doing everything in our power to prevent this from happening again.

Again, please accept my sincerest apology.

Phil Lane

KPRC VP & General Manager

A busy month in Houston and DFW radio!

Usually, I am more of a TV blog that also covers radio, but in December 2024, it might be swapped a little.

Just this week, we saw two Houston morning radio shows leave the FM dial:

Dean and Rog exit The Eagle 106.9/107.5

100.3 The Bull 'Morning Bullpen' signs off

Not only that, but we see another morning radio personality, Tessa Barrera, leave her job to pursue her secondary TV career full-time.

We also learned this month that Shara Fryer was officially released from the 740 KTRH morning news.

Since I have many Dallas—Fort Worth readers, I don't want to forget that Steve Lamb and Nicole Osei are both gone from the 820 WBAP morning show.

Finally, there is some good news to report. Michael Garfield, the "High Tech Texan," is now syndicated around major Texas radio stations, with fill-in opportunities on both national radio and KHOU 11's "Great Day Houston."

Back in DFW, Sybil Summers joined the 570 KLIF morning show.

The The Vibe is now on 88.7 KUHF HD3.

And just Friday came the launch of a new Houston radio station, La Ley 92.1 FM.

Let's hope for a more stable 2025, but let's face it, neither TV nor radio will be in any calmer waters in the new year.

UPDATE
We have some good news as Tony Cortez has been rehired at KONO 101.1 San Antonio radio.

Michael Garfield fills-in on TV and national radio

With the holidays upon us, like the promised cooler weather, we see many Texas media fill-ins and changes.

For example, Daniella Guzman is on the KPRC 2 morning newscasts this week. Ken Slama fills in at KSAT 12 San Antonio for this month.

And Tessa Barrera leaves 94.5 The Buzz to focus on her television gig with KPRC 2's "Houston Life."

A combination of these two stories is how now syndicated "High Tech Texan" radio host Michael Garfield filled-in Tuesday for Deborah Duncan on "HL" competitor KHOU 11's "Great Day Houston."

This weekend, Garf has to pre-tape his usual 950 KPRC show to fill in for IHeartMedia sister station 740 KTRH simultaneously on the nationally syndicated The CarPro Radio Show with Jerry Reynolds.

Sybil Summers joins 570 KLIF DFW

Sybil Summers has joined 570 KLIF DFW (and 96.3 FM) with Clayton Neville on "DFW’s Morning News."

She takes over or Laura Sadler who recently left.

"I’m so excited to be filling your earholes with [Clayton Neville] every morning from 5-9am on 570 KLIF," Summers posted on Instagram. "Not excited about the 1am alarm though.  It’s been a hell of a year, and there’s a lot more in store."

The Arlington native comes to KLIF with considerable North Texas radio notoriety, having worked in formats such as talk, sports, news, hot talk, CHR, classic hits, hot AC, and alternative.

Recently, Summers worked for 98.7 KLUV as an afternoon DJ from July 2019 to June 2023.

Before that, Summers worked for KVIL as a Middays personality for ALT 103.7 and before the station's format flip as mornings/middays for AMP 103.7 ("Fast in the Mornings" and "Mornings with Kannon and Sybil").

She also worked for 105.3 The Fan KRLD ("Ben & Skin Show" Sidekick & Producer and "Autoflex Leasing Show" host).

"I had to do it the old-fashioned way," Garfield told mikemcguff.com. "I had to shake hands, knock on doors, and promote myself way before social media."

All that work is paying off as the broadcaster connected to the "High Tech Texan" brand is expanding his weekend 950 KPRC Houston show to Talk Radio 1190 KFXR Dallas and News Radio 1200 WOAI San Antonio (already airing in the Alamo City, hitting DFW airwaves this weekend).

With the syndicated radio show heading to other big-market Texas stations, Garfield's iHeartMedia boss, Bryan Erickson, told him, "It's a good thing you didn't call yourself the High Tech Houstonian."

That name never materialized because Garfield, AKA Garf to his fans, has been a statewide presence for many years, going back to where many people first heard of him, as the voice and face for then Time Warner Cable's "Road Runner" high-speed internet service. He would later contribute to WFAA 8 DFW.

Garfield's "High Tech Texan" branding moved from ad campaigns to the radio for the then eight Clear Channel Houston stations, including his now decades-running show on 950 KPRC.

In fact, at 23 years running, Garf's radio show is the longest-running local radio show in the history of the 100-year-old KPRC-AM. That gives Garf the second-longest tenure at the now-named iHeartMedia Houston radio stations, only behind Sunny 99.1 KODA morning host Dana Tyson.

Now that the long-lasting local show is going to North and South Texas, Garfield will introduce himself to the new listeners so they know he is beyond a potentially boring tech show about fixing computers.

"That's the last thing I will do or I have ever done," Garfield explained.  "It's more about consumer lifestyle and products. I actually talk more about car and truck test drives and new recommendations than I talk about computers and laptops."

He certainly has the scoop on new auto releases. As a Texas Auto Writers Association member, Garfield no longer uses his personal car. A new one is delivered to his house every week for review. He estimates that in the past 15 years, he has test-driven more than 800 cars.

Beyond cars, Garfield delves into fashion trends and pop culture, all with a sense of humor.

"I answer many questions that people have before they go out and make purchases, large purchases, expensive purchases," Garfield told me.  "But if you don't entertain them, I don't think a lot of people continue to tune in."

Even though he now joins the ranks of syndicated Houston radio show hosts such as Michael Berry and Jesse Kelly, Garfield avoids political talk.

"I do not engage in politics, but I, without a doubt, have my opinions, and I've probably ticked off a lot of Aggies over the years with my love for the Texas Longhorns," said Garfield, who attended the 2024 SEC Championship in a decked out University of Texas themed private jet.  "That's about as controversial as I'll get."

While his radio career has steadily beamed through the airwaves, Garfield is also ready to supercharge his television resume.

"I started on TV," Garf said. "My first job was on QVC. I was the youngest show host ever to be on QVC at 24 years old. To be on national TV, you had to learn how to talk to viewers, position, and sell products."

The QVC experience landed Garfield on KPRC 2 Houston mornings in the early 2000s before radio and the Road Runner ads

Now, you can find him down the dial at KHOU 11 as a live field correspondent with Deborah Duncan on "Great Day Houston." He will also fill in as the "Great Day" host one day next week while Duncan taking time off.

"TV has always been a goal, it's always been a dream," Garf admitted.  "I love doing it and I hope I can continue to do it before I get wrinkly and gray."

Not that Benjamin Button, like Garfield, has to worry about aging quickly with his daily workouts and the great head of hair he says he inherited from his mother.

River Oaks Theatre "Runaway Radio" screening

I was on cloud nine or maybe cloud 101 last week during and after the River Oaks Theatre screening of my 101 KLOL documentary "Runaway Radio" to a near sell-out of the 249-seat big screen room!

Much of my life, going back to 1994, when I saw the first run of Kevin Smith's 'Clerks' has been spent in this iconic Houston film theater.

Thanks to everyone who showed up to watch a film about a Houston institution inside a Houston institution! From what I understand, KLOL offered listeners a one-dollar and one-cent price deal to see the midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show back in the day.

VIPs attending the "Runaway Radio" screening and cast Q&A included Texas State Senator Carol Alvarado and former 104.1 KRBE morning show host Maria Todd.

What's cool is that "Runaway Radio" is one of the first films to play in the newly reopened classic theater since it opened the door in October.

Dayna Steele, Lanny Griffith, Brian Shannon from Stevens & Pruett, Grego, Pat Fant, Doug Harris, Dr. Betty Halpern, Jay Jones, and director Mike McGuff all took the stage, with Michael Garfield, the "High Tech Texan" as the host.

“My very first ‘date’ was Brett Closs’ 7th birthday party with my crush Dale Clark, and we all went to see Fantasia at the River Oaks Theatre,” Steele said.

FavoriteRadioShirts.com even gave away new 101 KLOL t-shirts!
