Blake Mathews joins KHOU 11 weather

Meteorologist Blake Mathews of WJXT Jacksonville to take Mario Gomez's weather spot at KHOU 11

KHOU 11 has hired Houston native Blake Mathews to fill Mario Gomez's empty weekend weather seat.

For the past five years, Mathews has worked at WJXT Jacksonville, Florida as a meteorologist/weather producer.

"As many of you know I am not a permanent fixture on the air (at WJXT)," Mathews wrote viewers on his Facebook page. "My time is mostly spent behind the scenes. In order for me to be successful in my career, I deemed it important to be on the air full time and that's what I've decided to pursue."

Before that, Mathews worked as an assignments editor at KPRC 2 for almost year.

"When I moved [to Florida] nearly 5 years ago, I didn't think I could do it," Mathews wrote. "I had never lived more than 80 miles from my parents so this was a big adjustment. I learned a lot about myself and made lots of friends who have become my family."

His entry into the TV weather world began at KBTX 3 Bryan/College Station where he worked as a morning and weekend meteorologist.

He is a graduate of Texas A&M.
UPDATE:
Mathews tells me that he attended Texas A&M but is not an actual graduate of the university. He left and transferred his Aggie credits to Mississippi State University where he is currently working on a degree. Question for weather folks...WJXT refers to him as a meteorologist on its website, if he is still finishing his degree, can he hold that title officially? Should he actually be referred to as a weathercaster?

Watch for Mathews to start at channel 11 September 6.
