Former KENS 5 San Antonio reporter James Doughty (aka James Muñoz) is joining NewsWest 9 KWES Midland/Odessa as news director.

It's a homecoming for Doughty who is a Midland native.

"I am so excited about returning to my birthplace," Doughty told mikemcguff.com. "I Ieft in 1983 and Midland has changed, but the people are still so friendly."

Most recently Doughty has worked as communications manager for San Antonio City Councilman Joe Krier.

His television news career started in 1998.  Besides KENS 5, it's taken him across Texas at stations including KVII Amarillo, KIII Corpus Christi, KTRE Lufkin and KSAN San Angelo.

An interesting fact about Doughty is that he is a fourth generation Texan! He carries the namesake of his third great-grandfather who was the first superintendent of the King Ranch and Sheriff of Refugio County. Another one of his ancestors, John Moses, came to Texas in 1847 and wrote a series of columns for the San Antonio Express News from 1887 to 1890 under the pseudonym Sesom.

A search for his family is chronicled in his 2008 book Some Monument To Last. The book documents his interview with Walter Cronkite and how that meeting led to James finding his rich family history all the way back to 1755.

The Texas Tech University graduate is married with two children.

"This is a great time to be in television news and I am working under the direction of an outstanding and experienced General Manager (Jackie Rutledge)," Doughty told me. "I have already noticed the NewsWest 9 team of journalists here has what it takes to get the job done."
