93.7 The Beat Houston replaces 93.7 The Arrow KKRW

Classic Rocker 93.7 The Arrow KKRW is dead, The Beat KQBT takes over as Houston's newest urban station

So instead of Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy on 93.7, from now on you will probably hear Holy Grail by Jay-Z featuring Justin Timberlake. Just whatever you do, don't let Timberlake get near Reliant Stadium and Janet Jackson again!

That's because after 20 years, 93.7 The Arrow KKRW has flipped to an urban format with Beyonce as the first song. Fitting for Houston. 93.7 The Beat KQBT “H-Town’s Real Hip Hop and R&B” will target a heavy female audience with the likes of Rihanna, Jay Z, Drake, Chris Brown, BeyoncĂ© and Miguel.

**************************
UPDATE
The Breakfast Club takes over 93.7 The Beat KQBT mornings

93.7 The Beat KQBT announced its lineup:
5am-9am The Breakfast Club
9am-2pm: UB Rodriguez
2pm-6pm: Rudy Rush
6pm-10pm: Devi Dev
10pm-2am: Chris Michaels

**************************

And the new station was taking swipes at market leader 97.9 The Box KBXX from the get go.

93.7 The Beat Houston
I was sent this 93.7 The Beat Houston logo
before the change - it appeared on IHeartRadio.
"93.7 The Beat is ready to write a new chapter in Houston radio history. We’re defining what real hip hop and R&B is," said Eddie Martiny, President and Market Manager, Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, Houston. "Many of the biggest stars in this format live in Houston, so to move the station in this direction was a natural choice. In addition, The Beat format will perfectly complement the five other radio stations in our cluster by making us more attractive and diverse to our advertising community."

The process started New Year's Eve day 2013 at 10am. As I blogged earlier, the station started playing a wide variety of music from Miley Cyrus, Eminem to Oingo Boingo with pre-recorded announcements heralding the end of The Arrow and that a new station would arrive at noon (SEE THE LAST THREE SONGS THE ARROW PLAYED).

"Is it just me or do the Led Zeppelin songs on 93.7 sound different today," KKRW program director Steve Fixx asked mikemcguff.com.

This means longtime Houston rock DJs like Colonel St. James and Steve Fixx of KLOL fame won't have a radio home. Same for morning show newcomer JC Corcoran and mid-day jock Kelly Ryan.

"In late July, just four months after I began the new job in Texas, corporate dropped a bomb, telling me they weren't hiring a producer or co-host to build a show here as we'd agreed," JC Corcoran posted on his Facebook page. "In October I began hearing loud rumors. Last night when we returned to Houston from Christmas break I got the call. Today, a classic rock station with a twenty-year heritage is no more. We've all been let go. The station will be "stunting" for the next few days before revealing the new format. I'd just been nominated for "Employee of the Quarter." Seriously. Next week I'll continue on with the ten-to-noon show on 590 The Man in St. Louis while we try and figure out what's next. Good riddance, 2013."

LISTEN TO THE OFFICIAL 12/31/2013 NOON CHANGE BELOW:

"I had a great run at The Arrow," Colonel St. James posted on Facebook the afternoon after the format flip. "I left Clear Channel on very good terms, and I really wouldn't mind going back to work for them, if the opportunity was right. For now, I'm looking for a new adventure, so if you hear of something, please contact me. Oh, and it doesn't necessarily have to be in radio. All I can say is, I wish my friends at Clear Channel the best of luck with their new station. I hope to back on the air soon, and with your continued support and prayers, and if it's His will, I shall be! Thank you all so very much! God bless and Happy New Year!"

RadioInsight reported Sunday that 937TheBeatHouston.com was registered by Clear Channel. But talk of 93.7 The Arrow's demise has been around for much longer.

The rumors all started back in November. All Access reported Houston could be getting a new urban radio station.

Speculation on a now defunct radio board began that classic rocker 93.7 The Arrow KKRW would be the station to flip formats - if the rumors were true. Semantics would be the reason for that. All Access used the word "targeting" which is why people thought "The Arrow" would be the one...talk about a bulls eye [insert rim shot] or a total miss [insert audience gasp].

While several radio sources told me they heard this rumor getting hotter and hotter, a Clear Channel Houston marketing representative told me back then that they were not "aware of" KKRW flipping to an urban format.

According to the newly minted Nielsen Audio's (replacing Arbitron) November 2013 Portable People Meter 12+ numbers, The Arrow ranks 17th with a 2.3 share. That's down from a 3.6 in July (cue radio pros telling me 12+ numbers don't mean anything but that's all I have access to). Classic Rock competitor 106.9/107.5 The Eagle KGLK came in at number 10 with a 3.7 share in November.

"It's a good move for KKRW," Vice President, Market Manager for Cox Media Group Mark Krieschen told mikemcguff.com after the format flip. "It makes sense for that station considering where they are at in the ratings and it is a big day for us (107.5 and 106.9 The Eagle). The strategy for our cluster began when we hired Dean and Rog."

The Cox Media Group later put The Eagle's signal on both 107.5 and 106.9 - killing off 106.9 The Zone - to improve the station's signal all across Houston.

"Lots of people thought we were crazy to make both of those moves and it worked out for us and we are happy about it," Krieschen told me.

Now, for those not in Houston, our market's top three stations usually include Radio One's 97.9 The Box KBXX and Magic 102 KMJQ. Those are two urban stations that seem entrenched in the top of the radio ratings and totally unchallenged.

"I guess it is game on," Radio One Regional Vice President Doug Abernethy told mikemcguff.com after the format change. "This is not the first time that we have had an assault on our company. We have withstood Hot 97, Power, jazz in addition to flank attacks. So we will enter this latest challenge battle tested. We take this as a compliment to our success. It is people that make or break a station and we have an all star line up of talented individuals in every phase of the urban game. Our company was built on a foundation of serving our community and being African American owned we won't lose focus of our solid foundation in which we built well branded urban stations in Houston."

Other companies have tried and failed to compete with Radio One's Houston urban stations. But Clear Channel owns KKRW, so that means you have an entire radio powerhouse behind this new Houston urban station.

People are asking why we need another urban station. If you think about this way, you have two stations at the top of the ratings for a sizable hip-hop loving audience. If Clear Channel pulls away just some of those listeners and gains new ones, then it will probably be doing better than it was with classic rock as the format.

This could be an interesting radio war. Stay tuned.

Fans of 93.7 The Arrow KKRW will have a sad end to 2013 as the 20 year radio station is currently flipping formats.

Another recording said The Arrow will not exist after noon today in Houston.

"Is it just me or do the Led Zeppelin songs on 93.7 sound different today," KKRW program director Steve Fixx asked mikemcguff.com.

The last three Arrow songs played before 10am were:

Old Time Rock & Roll
Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band

Frankenstein
Edgar Winter Group

The Boys are Back in Town
Thin Lizzy

Followed by the following annoucement that change was coming.

The next songs were:

It's the End of the World as We Know It

Anthony Yanez adds to the KPRC 2 family

Anthony Yanez and wife Rebecca have new son right after Christmas

Anthony Yanez
Anthony Yanez
KPRC 2 morning meteorologist Anthony Yanez and his wife Rebecca are proud parents of Joshua Isaac who was born last week. A late Christmas gift if you will.

The station reported Joshua came in at 8 lbs 15 oz.

By my count, this is the Yanez family's fifth child. Looking back at my archives, I blogged in 2011 that Aubrey was the child's fourth child.

Congrats!

Another Houston TV baby wave of 2013 pregnancy I didn't even know about!

Chris Stipes now Fox 26 KRIV weekend anchor, plus other changes

Fox 26 morning anchor Chris Stipes moves to weekends, plus other reporter changes for 2014

What does the fox say? He says there are a lot of changes coming to Fox 26 KRIV.

I learn this after coming back from an East Texas trip where I had a discussion about bull and hog field castration. I've had TV managers try to do a similar procedure on me, although I bet it is done more humanly in East Texas. And for those who are concerned, don't worry, I still have a pair.
Chris Stipes
Chris Stipes

Back to KRIV, morning anchor Chris Stipes announced twice on Facebook that he is now the weekend anchor.

"Hey everybody the weekend is finally here," Stipes first posted. "That means it's a chance for you to catch me on my new assignment at Fox 26! No more early mornings for me... I'll be anchoring the weekend newscasts at 5pm & 9pm. Please tune in!"

Clearly by the exclamations he seems happy about not starting his newscast at 4am anymore.

That means we won't see this image anymore between Stipes and new morning anchor Rita Garcia. In fact, Stipes is swapping jobs with Garcia who was just recently the solo weekend anchor at the Fox owned and operated station.

This also means Stipes will now work the same days as his wife, Elissa Rivas, who is weekend morning anchor for KTRK abc13.

Don't think the changes stop with Stipes though. Multiple sources tell me the reporter schedules will change at the beginning of 2014. Most of the reporters will leave the day shift and start working the night shift at 1:30pm and report for both the 5pm and 9pm newscasts.

Several sources have told me that former morning reporter John Donnelly returns to that shift and most likely joined by newcomer Rashi Vats.

Also, I've had lots of questions about the whereabouts of Fox 26 reporter Ford Atkinson. Fox Television Stations tells me he is on vacation.

Jacqueline Crea joins KHOU from KTSM El Paso

UPDATE JANUARY 31, 2017
Jacqueline Crea to exit KHOU 11

Weekend anchor Jacqueline Crea moves from KTSM El Paso to KHOU Houston as reporter

Jacqueline Crea
Jacqueline Crea
Jacqueline Crea jumps 81 markets from weekend anchor at El Paso's KTSM to Houston's KHOU 11 as a reporter (see video below).

This and other news is my Christmas present to you. Lots of readers have been asking when I'm going to post again, so I thought I would gift wrap this news for you before the blog starts back up.

There has been lots of Houston media news still going on while I've been taking a break and I'm still putting it all on Twitter and Facebook so start following me there for all the action. Now back to the post.

"I am thrilled and cannot wait to start," Crea posted on Twitter.

According to her bio, Crea was born in Los Angeles and graduated from the University of California in San Diego. Instead of getting an agent at that time, Crea actually worked for one at Creative Artists Agency (CAA). She also worked as a freelance writer at KNSD San Diego before heading to KTSM.

She credits watching local news as a child with creating her passion for journalism.

Crea left KTSM last Tuesday and starts at KHOU in mid-January.

KTSM is a special station for me because my favorite meteorologist Mark Mathis works there, KPRC 2 weekend anchor Phillip Mena came from there and former KPRC 2 morning anchor Dan O'Rourke just worked there.

Now for those who aren't following me on social media, Josh Innes has left Houston, Atom Smasher is returning to Houston and the Dallas Morning News dumped WFAA for KXAS. Time to hit me up on Twitter and Facebook to get the news as it happens! If you want to just get my blog posts, like my Facebook page.

Also another update, to the person who is asking where Fox 26 KRIV's Ford Atkinson has been, Fox Television Stations tells me he is on vacation.

Houston uplink studio is throwing a party & you're invited

Former KTRK abc13 photographer/editor/producer Michael Carl is breaking out on his own with partners and throwing a big party this Thursday at his Houston Uplink Studios.

The west side of Houston studio has a complete uplink and liveshot studio capable of broadcasting to all corners of the globe in full HD 1080i resolution. This studio is modeled after studios that provide uplink and liveshots to CNN, ESPN, Fox NEWS, MSNBC, and others that are constantly doing uplinks from Houston.

The big media shindig goes down:

Thursday, December 19 at 7:00 PM
Where:
6011 Westline Drive Houston, TX 77036

http://www.houstonuplinkstudios.com

The facility also houses one of the largest sound stage studios in Houston at around 3100 square feet and a 20 foot lighting grid. It has a full floor to ceiling green screen with a harness.

That means I could live out my Peter Pan fantasy and fly anywhere that can be devised with a Chroma Key. Will Houston TV managers play Captain Hook?

That part of the biz is operated by RW Productions Inc. which has been around since 1987 and does everything from corporate, safety, marketing, television commercials, music videos, infomercials to web videos etc.

If that isn't enough, you might want to check out Champion Entertainment Inc. That's a film and video production company that has been active in the entertainment business since 1993 and acquires, develops, and creates conceptual movies, television programs, infomercials and specialty projects, such as reality television and animation.

Fmr. KBTX met Bob French claims discrimination and retaliation against station

KBTX and Gray Television the Subject of Federal Investigation by Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

UPDATE JULY 28, 2014
Bob French files lawsuit against KBTX

UPDATE

KBTX sent me the statement I asked for:

The KBTX family is disappointed to learn from other media outlets that our former colleague and friend Bob French has chosen to file a Charge of Discrimination with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission stemming from his employment here. KBTX and Gray Television respect the privacy of the employment relationship, and accordingly, will not litigate matters related to Mr. French's employment in the press. KBTX, however, will defend itself vigorously against Mr. French's allegations and is confident that upon reviewing the record, the EEOC will conclude that Mr. French's allegations are utterly without merit.

ORIGINAL POST

I received a press release this morning from a representative of Houston Employment Lawyer Charles H. Peckham. It says that former KBTX Bryan/College station meteorologist Bob French has filed a complaint about his former employer claiming discrimination and retaliation.

Many KBTX viewers have been emailing me asking about French's whereabouts. I had contacted French when Shel Winkley was named as his replacement in August, but did not hear back from him.

Here is the release.

Bob French
Robert “Bob” French, a Chief Meteorologist and Weathercaster employed by KBTX in Bryan and College Station for 23 years has filed a charge of Age and Disability Discrimination as well as Retaliation with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).

The charge names KBTX and its parent company, Gray Television Group, Inc. of Atlanta, Georgia as the target of the allegations. KBTX and Gray Television are now the subject of a federal and state investigation by the EEOC.

Bob French, over the age of 40, claims he was overworked during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays of 2012 while other much younger employees were allowed time off. The strain of the long hours resulted in French’s in-patient treatment for exhaustion and stress-related matters in Houston in mid-January and caused his absence from the airwaves while recovering under Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave.

Upon French’s return to work and on air in April, 2013, KBTX General Manager Mike Wright allegedly reprimanded French for matters relating to his disability and FMLA leave. Shortly after, French was fired from KBTX in early July, 2013. He was replaced by a weathercaster under 40 years of age.

Bob French was employed by a written contract that French also claims was breached by KBTX and Gray Television. Suit is expected to be filed on the allegations as soon as the EEOC federal investigation is complete.

Bob French is represented by Houston Employment Lawyer Charles H. Peckham.

“For KBTX to have violated Bob’s legally-protected rights is offensive” Peckham explains. “If KBTX can fire a beloved man such as Bob French for being over the age of 40 or for simply exercising his right to disability leave, no employee is safe from similar illegal treatment. Bob is standing up to send a message to KBTX that folks over 40 are not second-class citizens.”

Charles Peckham of the Houston-based law firm of Peckham PLLC is Board Certified in Labor and Employment Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. No stranger to high profile cases, Peckham is currently working as the civil attorney for James Kirkland, professional boxer and WBC Light Middleweight Champion; medical board attorney for Dr. Conrad Murray, the doctor accused of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson, and lawyer for nationally-syndicated radio host and comedian, George Willborn. Charles Peckham concentrates in many areas of litigation including employment, real estate and commercial law.

UPDATE 12/11/2013
Bob Dows Funeral: Friday, 11:00 am @ Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church

Late Monday night I started seeing reports on Facebook that KTRK abc13 photographer Bob Dows had passed away. Dows was an incredibly nice and generous man to work with.

Dows was most notably the photographer putting Marvin Zindler on TV every night along with producer Lori Reingold in the Action 13 unit.

"I've had friends throughout my life, but I learned how loyal a real friend can be," Dows said in a panel discussion on Zindler's life in 2011. "Marvin, I think, worked very hard, very long and I think he worked very hard and very long to keep the team together. Because it meant a lot to him and it meant a lot to us."

I don't know specifics at this point, but I'm pretty sure Dows was at KTRK 30 plus years. He graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

KTRK abc13 reporter Deborah Wrigley wrote the following on her station Facebook page about Dows:

You may not have known his name but for years, you saw his work. Bob Dows was Marvin Zindler's photographer, which was a job that required much patience and good humor. Bob had both in abundance. Tonight, after a long illness Bob passed away. He leaves behind a family of devoted friends he made through and at Channel 13 who will miss his smiles and friendship and his good soul.

UPDATE

Wayne Dolcefino talks about Bob Dows.

"Bob was a great guy," Dolcefino told mikemcguff.com. "Always very supportive of me and he must have been a saint to put up with Marvin for all those years."

Shara Fryer blogs more about Dows.

Bob was the quintessential gentleman, with a gentle spirit, a big heart and an intelligence and wit that de-stressed our work, not easy in the juggernaut wake of the Z-man.

Ted Oberg posts about Dows on Facebook:

Few people at ABC13 told stories like Bobby Dows. Bob was Marvin Zindler's longtime photographer, travelling partner and likely apologist for all those times when Marvin got a little ornery. Bob died last night and one of his photography colleagues joked this morning that after years of working side by side with Marvin, God allowed Bobby to step into St. Peter's HOV lane. Bobby deserved a break. Marvin likely met his old friend with a tongue lashing for taking so long to get there.
I've missed Bob in the months he was sick. He was a Louisiana native who told great stories about the business. He once shot film of a Fats Domino concert only to have his news car break down. Bobby was sitting in back of the club trying to get it going after the show and tells the story that Fats took off all his rings one by one, got under the hood and sparked it up. He told countless stories of running around the world with Marvin. It meant something to Bobby to be able use television to help people who needed it most. From the minute I met him, I could tell Bobby loved it. And I loved him for it. I already miss him.

Chris Stipes returns to Fox 26 with new co-anchor Rita Garcia

Take a deep breath everyone, Chris Stipes returns to Fox 26 KRIV for debut show with Rita Garcia

 photo stipesgarcia_zps55c1f58a.jpg

Beardless Fox 26 KRIV anchor Chris Stipes returned to the airwaves today after his paternity leave, and for the first time, read the news with newly named co-anchor Rita Garcia.

The above photo was taken from the beginning of the 6am show when Stipes told the audience he had been gone for a while. His fellow KRIV-ers told Stipes how glad they were to have him back and meteorologist Mike Iscovitz advised Stipes, if burping his newborn while still wearing his anchor clothes, to please use a burb rag.

I had people emailing in panic mode that Stipes wasn't returning since he cleaned out his desk before his baby leave time.

"Yes indeed, I did clear out my desk because I hadn't really cleaned it in about seven years," Stipes told mikemcguff.com in November. "I wanted it to be nice and spotless when I return from paternity leave several weeks from now!"

To be honest, I can see the cause for their concern. Stipes' co-anchor Natalie Bomke took a ride on the Windy City express to WFLD Chicago, followed by morning show movie man Jake Hamilton. Then longtime reporter Ned Hibberd dropped his reporter's mic to become the assistant news director at WJZY-WMYT Fox Charlotte. Who is next?

Bur for now, everyone can take their chill pill since Stipes and Garcia have been on the air in their debut show together.
