Sam Malone says 700 KSEV let him go; The MACK Show moves in

UPDATE:
There is a new Facebook page made for The MACK Show with Richard Mack Machowicz which claims to be the new KSEV AM 700 morning show. According to the page, "Mack" is a 10 year veteran of the U.S. Navy SEALs, Host and Producer of Discovery and The Military Channel show FUTUREWEAPONS, Host of Spike TV's DEADLIEST WARRIOR, Author of the Bestselling book UNLEASH THE WARRIOR WITHIN and Founder of NDCQ.com The Not Dead Can't Quit Social Network. (Thanks @shawnrbouley)
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Sam Malone is no longer at KSEV AM 700 The Voice according to a Facebook post today:

Officially.... I was let go by the station last Monday. Said they wanted to go in a "different direction". I was never on vacation. Thanks for all the support. I'll be right here on FB with all my friends!!!

A former morning show host on 104.1 KRBE and Mix 96.5 KHMX, Malone clearly still has the star factor after being on the radio here for decades. Why? I started receiving emails from his listeners last Monday about the talk show host not being on the air. I figured he was just on vacation. Then I got more and more tweets and emails asking about his whereabouts.

Malone did confirm to me last week he was not on the air anymore and promised to talk to me this Monday. I waited to post till I heard from him officially. Now that he has come out publicly, I see no reason to wait now.

His former KRBE co-host Maria Todd is now a weekend anchor at News 92FM KROI, but I'm going to say it anyway, let's hear it for a Sam Malone and Maria Todd radio reunion!

At the time of this writing the KSEV website is down, so I have asked the station for a comment by messaging its Facebook page. Will let you know if I hear back from a station representative.

  2. Eh, he's more of a fit for FM anyway with his Top 40 style.

  3. Gee, they may get me back as a listener. I miss Edd H.

    1. I have sorely missed Edd since he tragically lost his son and stepped up his family role as the good man he is, but I would REALLY enjoy listening to him again. Then again, as the good family man he is, he is taking care of proper priorities.

  4. Let him go to a small market like Tyler.

  5. Sam just needs to go back to spinning pop cds and light entertainment gossip. No one cares about his political stance.

    1. I agree. Sam talking politics was weird. He was totally out of his element. Quite boring as well. Joe Pags blows him away.

    2. No, Pags blows, period, Either he or Malone is just plain torture.

  7. Bye. I liked Edd better as Sam just annoyed me. He belongs on FM anyway.

  8. SAM IS AN EXCELLENT TALENT. I REALLY HOPE WITH ALL THESE CHANGES IN THIS SUPPOSE MAJOR MAKET RADIO CITY WE LIVE IN SOME STATION WILL GIVE HIM A MORNING SLOT AND AFTERNOON DRIVER SLOT. LAST I LOOKED AT KRBE RATEINGS THEY WERE DOWN BUFFALO BAYOU.

    1. KRBE is doing a lot better than The Eagle and KSBJ right now, even though they both have overblown coverage areas. The only stations it has to beat though are The Buzz and Sunny.

  9. If you think KRBE's ratings are down, apparently you can't read very well. KRBE's ratings aren't published publicly anymore because owner Cumulus doesn't pay Arbitron for them. All the ad agencies get them though, and they're right where they've been the last several years - beating the format competition.

  10. I like Sam & his encouragement on true marriage & his faith. I've been missing his show every morning :+(

  11. Listened to Sam sometimes. My wife listened a lot. Sam had a polished, professional style. Probably didn't fit the image of KSEV who likes to try and spin a down home, folksy feeling. Given the two styles..prefer Sam.

  12. I loved listening to Sam in the morning. His shows were informative and interesting. He has such decency and honesty about him that you just don't hear on other talk radio shows. You could drive to work feeling happy, informed, laughing out loud and arrive relaxed. Now, I'm afraid the road rage will increase. The new show is not what we need driving to work, way too aggressive. Some of the comments were offensive. I'm now a former listener of KSEV.

  13. Sam is much better than Ed Hendee and Dan Patrick. Not sure what Dan is trying to do.

  14. I like Sam Malone, and love 700 KSEV but have found myself turning the dial and listening to Joe Pags, even though I hate the 950. I think it was time for a change but I hate to see Sam go. Go Luck Sam.

  15. I was not sure about Sam when he first came to KSEV. He soon won me over and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to his program. I found him to be informative, enthusiastic and a great interviewer. I will miss his program. I wish him the best and hope he finds a new radio home with a similar format.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I like Sam, and truly thought his opinions were in line with the station. This comes as a big surprise to me. I hope he pops up somewhere else soon!

  17. Seriously? Sam Malone was let go? Sounds like KSEV is not as conservative as they make themselves out to be. I also think it was quite rude to leave his loyal listeners hanging. KSEV lost a loyal listener. I'd rather sit through Matt Patrick than Dan Patrick, or even Dave Ramsey.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Matt Patrick sounds better than I imagined. He has good guests. I spend 50% or more of my hour drive time listenting to him, and I used to be 100% KSEV

  18. It is almost like karma got him for what happened when 96.5 fired roula & Ryan for Sam Malone......

    ReplyDelete
  19. Sam's program was the only reason I even listened to KSEV. Sam proved that a humerous conservative perspective could be given without being as priggish and uptight as Edd Hendee, or as arrogant as Dan Patrick. This move, along with KSEV picking up the Mike Huckabee program shows that this will now be a more Republican establishment programming rather than independent Tea Party thinking. I wonder if this signals a political move upwards for Dan Patrick?

    1. Sam proved what? The man couldn't say the name of the President without adding three racial slurs. He was a disgrace.

  20. I so enjoyed listening to Sam Malone in the mornings. Big mistake Mr. Patrick!

Nothing against Machowicz, but I had to change stations when he was introduced this morning...He says "and a" along with taking huge breaths between each sentence. Not easy to listen to. Sorry, won't be listening to KSEV anymore early morning.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I liked listening to Sam Malone while driving in the morning. Now I find myself checking out other stations.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hey, let's look on the bright side. The last time we had a major morning-drive change at KSEV we were treated to the Jon Matthews debacle, so this is way better than that!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think it's a good move. Sam never came across to me as someone who was keen on world events. A show of this format really needs someone who can foster provocative discussions on the effects of such events. Sam's focus seemed to be more on what he, his wife and son talked about the previous day.

    ReplyDelete
  24. When Sam first replaced Edd I didn't like him so much, but after a while I came to respect him greatly. His stance on marriage and politics are right on the money. Good luck to Sam.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I listened to Sam almost every morning and enjoyed his style, always nice and friendly to callers like he really wants to hear what you have to say. I also enjoyed his activity with Tea Party. He will be missed. No more KSEV, I will listen to 740 and 950.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I also felt uncomfortable when Sam first joined KSEV. However, he grew on you. I never felt that talk radio was his best gig. He was really loved on FM radio with Maria Todd and did a fine job, too.

Good luck, Sammy. We will miss you but realize you will probably pop up once again on Houston radio. Thank you for your wonderful family and marriage values.

  27. yep....Sam was good.....700 loss

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well, I am really disappointed. I have been missing Sam - assuming vacation or whatever. Not so it seems. I liked Malone - he was conservative, talkative, humorous, and positive. The drive to work really started the day great. I don't need or want heavy handed negativity like some of the other hosts. Their attitude is aggressive. Good Luck to Sam. I am sure he will do well elsewhere on radio- hope I can find him. As for the new guy, good luck to him too. Everyone needs to get their chance to succeed. But, if he becomes another "complainer" - I am looking for Sam again.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I am so sorry KSEV decided Sam no longer fit their 'model'. I am a perfect fit for the demographic KSEV is trying to reach and I will no longer have any reason to listen to the station in the morning. It is all about the host, not the station. Sorry but true. Might as well go back to morning television or 1070am, which is gaining audience share. Sam was a WONDERFUL host, very approachable, conservative, loves his wife and family (great role model), has terrific interviews and we love his attitude! Dan Patrick, what's the deal? Not a smart move!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I am very sad and disappointed to see Sam go. My son and I listened to Sam every morning. This type of show was a great way to bring up important topics to talk to your kids about. I wake up each morning and while getting ready for work, I always turned on the radio and said "wake me up Sammy". He was always fun, positive, motivational and informative. Not sure what new direction KSEV is wanting to go in, but heading away from great morals, devotion in marriage, supporting our troops and faith in God sounds like they are going in the wrong direction. You lost me as a listener. Best of luck to you Sam Malone from your loyal fan! You will do great wherever you go!

    ReplyDelete
  31. KSEV you really messed up now.No more KSEV, I will listen to 740 and 950.

    ReplyDelete
  32. HUGE mistake, Dan Patrick! Now you lost my vote and KSEV lost a loyal listener. I loved Sam's enthusiasm, his positive outlook on life, and his conservative values. Apperanetly KSEV is not as conservative as they claim. Sam always gave me a boost of energy and hope, a charge of optimism before I started my working day. I listened to Dan Patrick this morning and turned my radio off in 5 min. No match for Sam Malone! He was droning on and on about some boring unimportant sfuff. KSEV wanted to go in a 'new direction'? I wonder what direction is it going to be? Huge loss, KSEV! Now you have REALLY big shoes to fill! If you ever fill them? Good luck, Samy! I am sure you will do well no matter where you go! You have a big talent and great disposition! Hope to keep in touch on FB. Now I have to find new radio station to keep me informed.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I just felt better to start the day with Sam. His message was conservative and he is patriotic. I am now listening to Pags at the 950. I wish Dan would at least tell the loyal listeners the truth to why the change. Was it philosophy, pandering, not tough enough, or just plain old ratings?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I enjoyed Sam's show but preferred Edd overall. I ended up finding Bill Bennett's show Morning in America on AM 1070 which I highly recommend. I'll give the new guy a chance but was hoping that Edd would be coming back.

  35. I listen to KSEV. I listen to Michael Berry. I listen to conservative radio. Sam was good. Good luck to Sam.

  36. Ok - where is Sam Seriously? I do not know but I thought Sam was a warm hearted good to listen to in the morning while driving to work. We Love Family oriented Talk show hosts I loved the format of listening to Dan in the evening but if I was to choose between Dan, Chris, Edd and Sam - I would choose Sam without a doubt. Dan no disrespect but stammers a great deal, Chris love him for anonymous and pointless (seems to be stuck in it himself) Edd seems or sounds like he is angry and also condesending sometimes. Sam makes you feel like he is one of us overall I like all of them at different times but for the mornings Sam was the best to start with. I hope Mark does well - don't know him but I will give him a chance maybe a few days if I am impressed fair enough but if Sam pops up somewhere at the same time sorry Mr. Mark you will lose me in that time segment. Another thing is they took down everything about Sam on KSEV and they were no forthcoming about letting him go. Good luck Sam hope you get another spot very soon. Good luck Mark hope you also become an outstanding show host. God Bless America we need all GOOD conservatives to restore our nation.

  40. I really looked to tuning Sam in when I got in the car for my 6 to 7 deive time. I can't handle a full blast of Joe Pags every mouning so I guess I will be switching back and forth between him and JP and Lana. 740 screwed up when the replaced them with Matt Patrick. He does a crummy interview. Dan I like your political views but really don't like this move.

  41. Wow Sam Malone's firing has really struck a nerve with Houston listeners. 42 comments and counting. Apparently you can have a huge following without being a gold-digging divorcee blabbing about a second marriage through fake puffy lips.

  42. Wow, I am really going to miss Sam in the morning, he made my commute enjoyable.

  43. Good riddance and long overdue. Even for a guy from Philadelphia he was obnoxious and his show was terrible. Let him go back to being a lame dj. Anybody in that slot would be an improvement. Sam Malone made me a Michael Berry listener.

  44. I have tremendous respect for Sam Malone, he was super! Good Luck!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Unfortunately, I don't listen to KSEV in the mornings, Sam Malone drove me away from that station long ago. But I would have loved to have heard what it was that got him fired. Was it telling the world that Ted Cruz is the real conservative in the Senate race? Criticizing Patrick for cutting school funds and wildfire fighting funds? Criticizing the guy who Patirck hopes will give him a job some day--Rick Perry? Or maybe agreeing with that legislator in San Antonio who has called for Patrick to come out of the closet? Sure wish I knew. At any rate, I would not be such a gentleman about it, Patrick sure isn't.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think Dan Patrick has made a huge mistake. In light of his allegiance to Dewhurst versus Cruz, it seems that he is becoming what he in the past has railed against, an Establishment Republican. I think this move may be politically motivated in my humble opinion. Good luck to you Sam, the Tea Party movement supports you.

    ReplyDelete
  47. This Mack guy is terrible. Poor Dan Patrick, what's he thinking? Special Edd, Fatboy Sam, Chris B., I guess Dan just deals with "C" list talent.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Loyal Sam listener, he was the reason I turned to KSEV in the morning. Sam is positive, has strong moral values, small government supporter, and knows how to talk. Not impressed with Mack, like what he has to say, just not the way he says it, he's not ready for prime time yet. Dan, you made a mistake, you've lost me.

  50. Dan Patrick wants to be Lt. Gov. If Cruz beats Dewhurst then Dan won't get to slip in. Dewhurst doesn't deserve to be dog catcher. Dan got his start with the CLOUT bus trip to Austin, he was fighting Fred Hill, but when I personally met Dewhurst he got very upset about Dan's property tax cap. I think Sam Stading for Cruz cost him his job.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It did. But you have to hand it to him---he was a lot less of a hypocrite than the ones who stayed on that "conservative" station and pushed Dewhurst over Cruz. How'd that work out for KSEV?

  52. The last few posters I read before posting hit the nail squarely on the head. Dan Patrick has morphed from the most conservative Senator in the Texas Senate to an "Establishment Republican" who got rid of Sam Malone because he supported Ted Cruz instead of Dan's guy, David Dewhurst. Dan Patrick knows that Cruz is the more conservative of the two but Dan wants to be Lt. Gov. Firing Sam to get more power is what Dan Patrick did. Dan lost my support and my vote on this bone headed move.

    1. I haven't made up my mind yet with Mack. He deserves the opportunity to figure it out and find his place as a talk show host. He has already said this is new to him and he is learning. The radio audience should at least give Mack a chance and offer honest, constructive suggestions and call in and talk with him. He is making an effort, what are you doing but criticize?
I liked Sam in the morning too but not to the point I won't vote for Dan and won't listen to his radio station anymore. Silliness to put so much into a radio personality that you stop listening and make judgment on the new guy after only 4 days.
It's a huge assumption one seems to know the motive of Dan Patrick and why he released Sam because Sam supported Cruz.

      Delete
    2. That viewpoint of "why" it happened and the timing of when it happened with 8 or 9 months remaining on Sam's contract... makes a lot of sense that it could have been very political vs. a good business move!!! Sure was a bad move in my opinion.

      Delete
  53. Have listened to KSEV since it's inception. Loved Edd Hendee and was sad when he left but really enjoyed Sam Malone. Now I must look for a new morning show - the new guy can only stutter, repeat himself and talk like he's running for a train. I've given him a week but simply can't stand him and he never finishes a sentence!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Really sorry to see Sam Malone go. He was excellent and a perfect fit for the time of day and the station.
Disappointed in Mack so far, but respect the guy and his contributions. Not sure this is a good fit for either Mack or KSEV....I'll try a little longer but am starting to fad and looking for a new morning station...until 9:00 AM.
Nothing against Mack but KSEV screwed up on this one.

    ReplyDelete
  55. This morning I had time to absorb the Blog comments about Sam Malone's departure from KSEV. A couple of discussions impressed me: the station's apparent stonewall about the dismissal, and the probable political motivations of Dan Patrick.
Certainly, these personnel moves are the business of the Owner. Our reactions, however, have validity. This station has emphasized a "we are family" attitude and profile for years, and I find the new approach both disappointing and offensive.
I was stunned to realize Russell Sherrill's "Press Box" at 5:30 AM has vanished after many years - maybe 20. That program was a favorite, and for the Search Bar to show only "Not Found" in response to both "Russell Sherrill" and "The Press Box" is insulting to a long-time KSEV listener.
I've had an abundant sufficiency of both Dave Ramsey and Mike Huckabee, with no personal disrespect intended.
No need for me to participate.
Won't be voting for Dewhurst, either.

  58. KSEV is no longer my radio station of choice in the morning. Mack appeals to a different demographic than the one I belong to. I used to occasionally switch from KSEV to Michael Berry but now find myself there almost all the time. I was sorry to see Sam Malone gone and I sorry to see the new direction of the station. It is just not working or me.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I've quit listening to 700 in the a.m. I don't like Mack's style. It sounds like amateur hour on the radio. Boring.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Sorry to see Sam go. He is a real pro and I wish him well. Mack has enthusiasm working for him, but he's not in Sam's league as a broadcaster. I have no idea what the ratings were for Mr. Malone, but I doubt that Mack will draw more then Sam did.

Radio can be a cruel, capricious business. I used to listen to KSEV a lot in the past. Rarely, now.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Sam Malone was a blast on KSEV: "Barack...Hussein...Obama." And no, I am not a Tea Party advocate.

Sam's replacement is about as exciting as a funeral home director. And I am no longer tuned into KSEV for the morning drive.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I liked Sam in the 90's when he was on 104 but on KSEV he seemed angry and mean. He talked about Israel all the time it was weird. He was boring too. Pat Gray and Ed Hendy were great.

  63. Anonymous

Pat Grey and Edd Hendee were great and Edd on his own was fab! Sam was good in the past but Edd and Pat with their political views spoilt me - wish one or the other would return - I seldom tune in now.

  64. I just voted for Ted Cruz because of how Dan Patrick fired Sam Malone for supporting him on air. No longer listening to KSEV either.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Sam had to go beause he had ties to the Tea Party and they back Ted Cruz but Dan Patrick told him to push Dewhurst. That was the conflict. Dan Patrick is looking to move up to Dewhurst's job so he finds himself bad mouthing the candidate that he knows is the real conservative---Ted Cruz. At least Sam had the honesty to leave KSEV unlike some of the other personalities there who call themselves conservatives but don't walk the walk on this one. Guess KSEV is not as conservative as it claims to be.

  68. Sam Malone wasn't my favorite (Edd was), but this Mack guy is a snoozefest. He's always begging and pleading people to call in and his style is too agressive and serious. I don't know what Dan was thinking. I don't listen to KSEV in the morning at all anymore. Usually go with Bennett or Pags.

  69. I've been listening to Mac from the beginning - trying to give him every possible chance. While I appreciate his service to the country and his patriotism, he is hard to listen to. I wish Sammy was still there.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Mac is so excited that he talks over people. Just like I do, so, I identify. He IS hard to lisen to. He needs to stop that. I do like the number of calls he takes.

Sam is/was an entertainer....with substance. It was the SAM show. Sam was building his own following, and routine, (7:20 dipstick, jet thief, ). I don't think Dan Patrick's ego can handle that. Sam was upbeat, but, I did not leave his show feeling uplifted, but, down. That is bad. He mixes Jewish and Christian concerns well, or should I say combines them, but, once I learned Sam was Jewish, he would not let me forget it. Still, fair. I wish Sam the best. He is a good guy, supports marriage, and is worth listening to.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Dan still has to deal with Dewhurst. If he had supported Cruz, and Dewhurst lost, Dewhurst would have made life hell for him. Dewhurst passed the business tax. Dan does not like him. He was playing politics. Dan will be able to get more done in the Senate. If not, he needs to lead an effort to de-seat Dewhurst.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Haven't listened to KSEV since Sam left. Mack is just boring and whiny (whinny?). "please listen to me", "thank you SOOO much"...He reminds me of the McDonald's worker who fell all over Obama several years ago. Mack needs to stay on TV where he has a script and it can all be edited prior to airing.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I used to listen to and from work on a daily basis not anymore. Dan not sure why you made the move but it is not working. It's time to pull the plug on the MACK show and if Edd is at a point in his life with the added responsibilities that he could return that would be great.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I guess we all now know why KSEV backed Dewhurst over the conservative Ted Cruz and why Sam Malone, who would not back him, got fired. Or do you think that the recent jobs handed out to Dan and his son by Rick Perry are just coincidence?

    ReplyDelete
  75. They should bring back Jon Matthews. Now there was a real conservative!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I guess Sam Malone's phone wasn't ringing as much as he expected. The guy has disappeared.

Meanwhile, how much of a "conservative" station can KSEV be to have suppported Dewhurst over Cruz? But it worked out ok for Dan and his son. Boss Perry gave them both nice spots.
