REVIEW: Living Sacrifice in Houston

Writer Rob Hays attended the Living Sacrifice show at Houston's Warehouse Live and filed this report for the MikeMcGuff.com Blog:

Like Sylvester Stallone becoming Rocky again (without the embarrassing Australian steroid investigation), the men who compose the classic metal-core band Living Sacrifice made their return to Houston Monday night, older and wiser, but still packing an awe-inspiring punch.

After going on hiatus in 2003 when guitarist Rocky Gray left the band to drum for Evanescence, the Arkansas stalwarts brought the thunder in a tight, well-arranged set that could’ve fooled you into believing that they had never been apart.

The set ranged from the thrash of early albums like Inhabit to the hardcore-inflected rhythms of their later career, all delivered with a sense of atmosphere and pacing that the other bands on the bill (Demon Hunter, The Famine, Oh Sleeper, and Advent) could only hope to emulate. From the moment the lights at Warehouse Live dimmed before they took the stage to the final notes of “Reject” (from their influential 1997 release Reborn), they had the diverse crowd by the throat.

Even more fortunate for die-hard fans, the band announced the forthcoming release of a pair of new tracks today (via MySpace) ahead of a full reunion album. If you like your rock fast and hard, with complex rhythms and aural-assault vocals, the new material is a must-have.
