Where's New Year's Eve Houston?
I wrote about this subject in 2005 and now the topic is hotter than ever after the city of Houston failed to keep a promised, annual tradition alive.
Is an alleged, unspoken cop shortage stopping it?
BlogHOUSTON points out how Chris Baker on News Radio 740 KTRH devoted an entire show to this topic. I never can listen to Baker's show, but thought the online archive was pretty entertaining. Baker did a good job fueling the discussion.
If you look back to my old post on this topic, I link to a Houston Chronicle archive about the late 90s New Year's Eve Houston bash. According to that article, the event seems to have been coordinated, not by the city, but the owners of Bayou Place. I contacted them this morning to inquire why the event stopped and if there are any future plans to bring it back. Will let you know if I hear from them.

New Year's Eve Houston, let me sum it up for you:
Drink a sixer. Take a shower. Drink a 40, drive to Treasures. Drink an over priced Gin and Juice. 45 singles later, drive to bar. Drink pitcher with a buddy. 3, 2, 1 "happy new year". Order shots. Drink 8 more beers. Swerve home. Pass out. Wake up around 2pm, complain that the city has done nothing to make the night more fun.
By contrast here's how things went when they had the rising star:

I have a great idea, take all the money Houston would spend on new year's and every other festival in 2007 and spend the money on cops. That way December 31st 2007 we can all gather hand in hand outside city hall and sing Kumbayah without the fear of a gang land killing? Nah, let's just have another event, I mean, who cares if another person is gunned down or is forced to live in the shadows because of gangs and drugs? I mean COME ON! How about this, instead of the rodeo parade, this year we have the gangs represent and start blasting each other as they ride down main street! Dude, I can see it now, kid gets capped, the parents all screaming, the news all reporting, and like usual, no cops! Why not? because no one at city hall gives a schizzle about protecting us. Grab a gun my young friend, it's gonna be a wild and wooley 2007.
