Where is Pat Gray of Talk Radio 950 KPRC?

Saw an interesting piece in the Houston Business Journal Monday. It was about The High-Tech Texan, Michael Garfield, getting a five day a week show on Talk Radio 950 KPRC:

On Tuesday, Michael Garfield will begin hosting his own weekday show at 9 a.m. after four years of hosting a Saturday afternoon technology program on TalkRadio 950 KPRC.

The new two-hour show, airing Monday to Friday, will continue to hype new technology products.

That got me thinking. Where will Michael Berry go on the schedule? Doesn't his show air at 9 a.m.? Is his show canceled? So I jumped on the Talk Radio 950 web site and saw that Michael Berry now signs on at 6 a.m. But wait, that's Pat Gray's slot!

There is no sign of Pat Gray (aka Glenn Becks' best friend) on the 950 AM schedule at the time of this writing.

Where is Pat Gray? First Deborah Duncan and now this!

Then I remembered, I don't listen to KPRC unless Matt Drudge is on, so this doesn't really impact me.

My biggest question was why this change wasn't prominent earlier on Garf's blog? So I checked and there it was! I was relieved. He had just put it up there late. He is a big time promoter and that would have been a big let down for me if he didn't mention it. Hope he's not slipping.

Now that I don't go into work until 2 p.m., I should listen.

Happy Thanksgiving week Pat, hope you are doing OK.

UPDATE:
A comment says Pat Gray's web site has been update with some news Nov. 21st:
The Pat Gray Show is moving to a new station! It is all part of our evil plan to take over the world with our right-wing extremist agenda. Liberals, beware! Everyone else, it's just one more thing to be thankful for this Thanksgiving Day as we plan extremely way cool improvements to the show!
11/28 UPDATE:
blogHOUSTON reports that Pat Gray is podcasting.

I'm just glag Berry is signing off at 9am so I don't have to hear his continued rants on (illegal) immigrants.

Says on he's moving to a another station on his website patgray. Did I miss talk about this move on the show? Tried to download the podcast of the last hour of the show but its not there, only hour 1 and 2.

Thanks for posting the info, Mike. I'm still a big time promoter but now I will be pimping TalkRadio 950 KPRC.

I'll try to refrain from too much tech talk on weekday mornings but I'll still have my Saturday 12p-2p show for a while.

Keep on blogging!

Michael Garfield 5 days a week? I guess I will have to switch over to KSEV in the mornings. Garfield STINKS! Really, why don't they just re-run old Deborah Duncan shows like KTRK? Even dead air for 3 hours would be better than "Garf". Seriously, what's up with this move? Mike, I know you have the pulse of the radio community, please, tell your faithful blog readers the truth! Why is Pat Grey leaving? You need to dig a little deeper, maybe then you would find the so called "conspiracy" is actually happening! Don't stick your head in the sand over this, the truth will come out, and the truth will set you free, unless of course the truth is that Garfield is now on 5 days a week, then the truth will imprison you to boring radio and no real need to listen to 950. I remember Adam Smasher and the hey day of Houston radio. This has got to be the low point. I mean, come on, GARF? As if Garf knows the first thing about the perils we face!?! Mike, help us!

Anonymous said...

Dude, chill out, Adam Smasher? Really, "Garf" as you cal him is great!
One time my hard drive crashed and I called a few shows, you know like Kim Comando and such? Well Michael was the only one who actually helped (thanks Michael from a listener in Pearland).
It sounds like the previous poster needs to take another hit from the bong or something and crawl back to 1970...dude, wake up, if you can! Michael is the best! I don't know Pat, I'msure he was good too, but i am a faithful listner to the High Tech Texan and now I can enjoy him 5 days a week! This is the best news since Radar was neutered!

Anonymous said...

much like Radar, you have no balls.
If you think Garfield os so great, why don't you meet me at the corner of Fountainview and Westheimer at that HEB and we can talk about it man to man!

Anonymous said...

Uh, hello! you want to fight over the High Tech Texan? Are you 12 or what? Besides, I live in Pearland you idiot! I just went to the Pat Gray page you linked to and got a "parked" page courtesy of GoDaddy.com.

No sign of we are going to another station type message as you mentioned.

As for the High-Tech Texan; I think I like him better once a week instead of 5...

Have you come across any more info on Pat Gray? I got this email back from Ken Charles:

Sadly, Pat's program is no longer a part of the KPRC line up.

It was a very tough decision but we felt this change was necessary. I
can't explain why his popularity did not translate to our ratings system. I wish I could. No one worked harder to make his show successful then Pat.

Sorry for the suddenness of the change,

kc

Regional Vice President of Programming

When I asked if Pat had moved to a different station, I got this reply:

He did not.

So where did Pat Gray go? There's no announcement on KPRC's website, all his podcasts are gone, as is his blog. WTH happened over there??

Anonymous said...

Pat got canned from what I can tell... 950 is going to s***. I'm very angry about this. No offense to Berry or Garfield, but I'd rather listen to Pat Gray and Glenn Beck. What's the deal 950? Lots of listeners are pissed.

Redhead Infidel said...

When I first moved here from San Antonio, I loved Chris Baker. The he was gone, followed by Glenn Beck, and now Pat Gray. There does seem to be a pattern here.

Redhead Infidel said...

Oh yeah...

and how come no explanation to the listenership? There's nothing on the website - not one word. That seems really shady and utterly low class.

I guess I'll have to make the switch to KTRH for good.

Anonymous said...

I know how you feel, Red. It's as though something important has been ripped from me. I don't know of any other way to explain it.

Radio stations rarely, if ever, announce the departure of one of their hosts. It's just something that's not done within the industry. I learned that in my college media courses on radio.

Uzibeatle said...

I have to express befuddlement and
am upset Pat Gray was canned by the
powers at KPRC. I can't stand much Micheal Berry and some months ago found myself tuning in KTRH's morning lineup which I find better. Pat Gray was my morning entertainment politics fix. Now all that KPRC has that pulls me in is Micheal Savage (who I can only take a few hours a week or my head explodes) and Glenn Beck (who I now listen to via his web site via insider). OTher than that the weekend garden show n what not I listen to regularly when not tuning in homehandyman on KTRH.
KPRC you shot yourself again.

Anonymous said...

I am very disappointed about Pat Gray leaving KPRC. I understand that I am only one listener, but I will no longer listen to 950. I would love to have an idea about where he is now. Is that too much to ask? I am truly disappointed that the higher ups of KPRC do not have a clue about what the listeners like. Very sad.

Hollis said...

Like so many other entertainment vessels 950 is in desparate need of repair. The double mint twins airing in the morning are weak. This switch was an under handed trick to lure all of us into lessoning to these two meat heads. Guess what 950 my radio is off. I do not need you for Rush, Savage, or any other conservative talk show host. May you crash and burn.

Anonymous said...

Like everyone else, 950 has gone liberal and will soon be catering to the mexicans, and islamic extremist. I say that 950 will be a full blown spanish station within 6 months. The new lineup sucks 950!

I've been laughing through morning traffic on I-45 since I began listening to Pat Gray -- I can't believe he's vanished - poof! Michael Berry and his fake Southern accent together with his nasal whiny voice makes me nauseous - what the heck!?? What WERE you thinking 950? Bad choice, bad decision. I can only think Pat Gray might have mentioned his homeschooling, conservative family and stand-up principles too many times for the 950 lunkheads in charge -- so listen up lunkheads: I have 1 child at home homeschooling, 3 children in public school, am a long-time Girl Scout leader, am conservative, and I am a full-time-working bread-winning mom. I am the face of many hard working women in Houston listening to AM radio, and I truly enjoyed Mr. Gray's take on the morning's news and current events. Pat Gray - wherever you are - we'll find ya and tune in once again. XOXO - Loyal Listener

Anonymous said...

At first I thought Pat Gray was on vacation for Thanksgiving. Then I realized this Michael person was on for good. I can't stand him. I am back to listening to 99.1 until I decide which other talk radio station I want to listen to because I will NOT listen to 950 ever again!!!! Pat Gray stood for morals, family, and God. KPRC has truly made a bad decision and will loose many listeners. An X-listener

Michael Garfield is no good for morning and Michael Berry is boring. I won't be listning to either. I will listen to Rush, although mornings will be FM.

Thanks for the heads up KPRC, just like when Chris left it took me a week or so to figure out what the deal was. So far I don't mind Berry too much and Pat did go over the top at times but my listernship on this station is definitely going to fade now. As far as Chris Baker goes, they should have held on to him. It's kind of painful listening to Garfield try and make come up with material, I guess that's why I tune out now.

And Ken Charles, you're not funny, just egotistical.

Another stupid move by Ken Charles. First Glenn, now Pat. I have no reason to listen to kprc anymore. I feel that the faithful listeners are at least owed an explanation of where Pat went. Pat, if you are reading this, I want to wish you the best.

Larry Englander said...

What is it with Ken Charles? He must have a preference for men whose voices are capable of hitting High C. Berry and Garfield are two of the "whiningest" males (I think they're males) I've ever had the misfortune to listen to. "So" you say, "why listen to them?" You're so right. I'm done with KPRC. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it, Ken Charles.

Losing Pat Gray was like losing an old friend. I have listened to his show since he first came on the air. Made the commute bearable. Been in Baghdad, Iraq 21 months and listening to Pat and Peggy over the web made this place bearable. Ken Charles??? Not worth a bucket of Iraqi dirt, which is absolutely worthless.

First Glen now Pat. I guess Ken has decided to follow the "Air America" model!

Best wishes to Pat and Peggy, I'm sure they'll be back on the radio soon! :)

after glenn beck was booted for a politician, i felt betrayed by the station. glenn beck stood for something great and i could not see how 6 hours of local topics would be an improvement. now pat been booted for a beurocrat and a high tech show. nothing against either person, they seem like really good people but not worth listening to. i now stream glenn beck from a dallas station and turn my radio off. what a shame.

Who had the brilliant idea of now taking Pat off the air???? With no warning either, SHAME on 950!!! I will never listen again. I loved listening to Savage, Beck, Baker? Hmmmmm, can anyone say conspiracy??? All of these guys were popular, and now they are gone?

I don't like the morning line up, and Berry is a joke. They have lost me as a listener.

I thought Pat Gray was on vacation too until I came back from my vacation and he STILL wasn't there. I e-mailed Ken C. also and told him -he made a Bad decision, and he lost me as a morning listener. Pat and Sean are the only ones I liked. I loved Pat's impersonations! I guess I will try the podcasts now..

Pat Gray made the transition to Rush bearable. Why has 950 chosen such actions? Why ? Why? Oh, why? Glenn and now Pat. Pat, we hardly knew ya.

Catia said...

I don't think KPRC is going liberal, as some of you suggest. And Glenn is still on KPRC, they just moved him to a time slot when people with normal working hours are falling asleep. If Ken Charles is making these decisions, he's the one who should be let go. I like Michael Garfield, but he's a topic specific host. Unless you're interested in technology or addicted to talk radio, no matter the topic, then I'm not sure if he'll catch on or not. Especially not in Houston, given the poor and uneducated growing demographic in this city. More power to him in this endeavor though. I think this whole Pat leaving, Michael 5-days/ week was pretty unexpected for all, which is why it wasn't mentioned. My theory is that Pat and Ken Charles had some sort of falling out. Pat always sounded somewhat annoyed whenever Ken would chime into the show. Drove most of us crazy I think, not just Pat. He likes to hear himself talk, I think. KPRC is now almost solely nationally syndicated shows during the week, which you can hear on any station in the country given technology these days. Maybe it's just me and my crappy car, but ever since around Hurricane Rita, I can barely get reception from KPRC anyway. I no longer listen in my car. I live next to their building, so I get it at home, but it's very difficult anywhere else. Maybe that's part of the ratings problem? Or maybe en didn't take into consideration that ratings cannot be tracked through downloadable podcasts. Same issue with TIVO and media ratings these days. TV ratings watchdogs can't factor in viewers who TIVO and watch it later, as can't radio ratings watchdogs with podcasts and internet listeners. Unfortunately, with listener paid-for satellite radio, Clear Channel and other radio outlets are having a difficult time competing, since they are advertiser-funded. Why people are willing to pay for radio when you get it for free via the internet or normal radio, I do not know. People these days make money wherever and however they can get it, whether it's bottling water or charging for basic news media. Pretty soon, I'm sure someone will charge us for getting a single TV station, whether you have cable or not. They're already trying... remember when they discussed making all stations HD, so everyone would have to buy HD converters to get any channels? And those who couldn't afford, the city was going to provide as welfare-type handout (paid for with the money that you've worked hours and days for that the govt. confiscates (to buy HD converters for others) before you even realize you earned it). Another thing they didn't consider, is that Pruitt & Shannon, one of the highest rated Houston morning shows, will be no longer after Dec. 22nd, b/c their station, 97.5 FM, is changing their format to ESPN sports talk or something. Pat will be sorely missed, not just by his fans, but by KPRC, after they realize their mistake in letting him go. That's their mistake to learn from, hopefully, though they didn't learn from Chris Baker, or Glenn. Word of advice Ken Charles: Pick up Phil Valentine. He's your last hope.

Pat Gray's departure is very sudden and mysterious. At first we thought he was taking an extended Thanksgiving vacation. But Michael Berry has been on too many days and is trying too hard to be good for us not to wonder. My guess is that it was a money dispute. Pat's absence clearly is going to hurt 950. Edd Hendee isn't as funny as Pat but I will be spending a lot more time with him. Maybe Glenn Beck influenced Pat to push the envelope and ask for too much money. Somebody made a very bad decision---either it was Pat Gray asking for too much money or Ken Charles et al being foolishly thrifty.

Anonymous said...

Good Riddance. Gray's been stealing a paycheck for far too long. His inane pathetic "attempts" at humor were pitiful. The incessant "sighs", the "BlueBell" thing personified this 1 trick Shetland Pony. I'm sure some of the right wing nutballs have grown fond of test pattern hum that was his program but we Independent types would greatly appreciate some information, wit with a dash of humor for the commute. Kudo's KPRC for going against the Ditto wind of the ever flatulent flat Earthers.

I was upset when Ken Charles let Glenn Beck go for Michael Berry. I can't listen to Mr Berry at all. Now I find that Pat Gray has been fired and replaced by Michael Berry. I will no longer listen to KPRC at all. I listen to 700 A.M. now. They are not as good but now that Pat is gone they should get a great boost in ratings. A fantasy would be if 700 A.M. picked up Pat Gray.

I am gonna miss Pat too. I usually listen back & forth between Pat and Edd on KSEV. Now it's Edd all the way.

I am through with 950 KPRC. I loved Pat Gray...he made the mornings bearable with the right amount of crankiness and humor. He made my miserable commute into work actually enjoyable. I cracked up every time he did his Michael Jackson impression. Loved Peggy too. I wish Pat and Peggy the best!! You're an idiot Ken Charles...can't stand Michael Berry and after this morning's show, I'm done for good!!!

Finally some info..been wondering where my favorite radio guy had gone..so Charles kicked us to the curb.. Berry isn't too bad but Garfield makes me tired listening to his voice..and why do they still have Ken Hoffman come in on Wed. he is a pain...will be listening and reading hoping to find out where I can once again enjoy listening to Pat...oh yes will only listen to KPRC to hear Savage.. Gray and Savage are the top of the line.

Anonymous said...

I willbe hoping that Pat will find a larger home soon. Clear Channel may own most of Houston's stations but that will soon change. Many stations of CC will be up for sale shortly....

Anonymous said...

Oh my god. Berry and "Garf"?? I'm not a station manager, but how can you turn over your top money slots to such irritating rank amatuers who are uttterly pathetic. (I have always been amazed that the completely untalented "Garf" would be allowed to have even a 1-hr Saturday afternoon special-topic slot, but then rationalized it as a cost cutting measure for a time period that was never listened to anyway). 5 days? YIKES!

Maybe I should have been a station manager. Say what you might about Pat, but he was a consummate professional - something that KPRC no longer has. Can you say "adios Pat y Rush y Ole Compadres??"

Believe me it's coming...and soon.

Anonymous said...

Hello. The removal of Pat Gray form the KPRC line-up really shouldn't cause too many ripples in the overly conservative slant of the station. Consider this..Glenn Beck (a top 5 national show) was moved to 10pm...who didn't see the "best friends" exit coming? With the result of the 2006 mid-term elections, the "white knuckled" grip of Pat Gray and is ilk on the neo-conservative agenda has been discovered for what it truly is...a culmination of extremely narrow and narcissistic views on how to keep the Unites States prosperous and strong, in which neither has been the result. Simple research proves the ultra-conservatives do not have a monopoly on proper policy; foreign and/or domestic. It is time for us as a country to correct itself back towards the center, where the founding fathers discovered what worked best, compromise with national unity. "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-T. Jefferson. You can be the judge whether or not Gray is the former or latter, however; his exit is a welcomed sacrifice for true liberty and unfettered thought and discussion among basic Americans. Houston...Americans...it is long past the time for us to take back our place as world leaders, which can only be done with true compassion, frugality, proper education, and brevity.

Ken Charles...continue to lead the way for a new type of talk radio where progressive ideals can be heard. Thanks.

Canning Pat was a HORRIBLE move! Ken Charles has the same managerial skills as the Texans GM. Pat was an extremely funny, relevant, and entertaining morning host who gave KPRC 4 hours every weekday, plus even mnore on Wednesdays. He managed to keep all of the hours energetic, upbeat, compelling and entertaining.

And who have they replaced him with? Michael Berry? BAHAHAHAHA! Is this a joke? Can anyone honestly make the case that Michael Berry will get better ratings than Pat Gray? Berry's voice alone is enough to put you to sleep, nevermind the fact that nothing he says is ever entertaining. He seems like "that guy" who talks your ear off about boring crap at parties. Who you need to make an excuse, to step away from. God, he's awful. He's like verbal sominex.

He also sounds like some redneck who keeps giving you his opinion on things. Who CARES about this hick's opinion? At least Gray sounded articulate and educated and had a personality.

Then there's Garfield. Garf was fine in limited doses on the weekends when he would keep in his area of expertise, electronics. There he could be informative, giving you the scoop on the latest program or device. But only on a Saturday when there was nothing else on. During the weekday mornings there is too much competition. Plus this tech guy was just talking about the Seattle airport Christmas tree incident and Apocalypto. Do we really want to hear a tech geek give his opinion about politics and current events? Ugh!

With Rush leaving, that leaves Hannity and Savage as the only shows worth listening to on KPRC. Ken Charles is a fool. It's like the Texans thinking a defensive lineman is a better draft choice than Vince or Reggie. You go from a guy who used to do a successful show with Glen Beck to a local redneck city councilman and a tech geek. EXCELLENT move, Ken!

So I guess I'll be tuning in to Pat and his new show on 700AM. As it was I was just listening to my Ipod or trying to bear with boring Bill Bennett on 1070am. Even droll Bennett is better than having to listen to Gomer Pyle in the mornings.

Good riddance in the mornings, 950!

Some nice posts and some serious buffoons!

I liked the Pat Gray Program and will listen to 700. I only listen in the car, so I only catch Rush if I'm out around lunch and Savage on the way home. Mornings will be 700. Savage is to the point, Rush may not be right but I think he's entertaining, that's what I listen for. Not to get direction on my thoughts, morals and opinions, but just to be entertained.

For the "Garf" listeners: learn something about technology! I'm a technology geek and I can't stand mg. He's way behind the real "geeks" so no, geeks don't listen.

To the Concerned American: Your idea of what is "progressive" is as out of date as a tie-dyed tee shirt and pukka shells. The 60s are over, dude. You'll probably counter with, "but WE won the election." Everyone has an off year, son, and the constant browbeating of the leftist media set the tone. (Speaking of "white knuckled grip" how about that Air America?) We can't help it if the average American is an ignorant buffoon like Ken Charles.

Firing Pat was a poor business decision that happened to coincide with a lot of Clear Channel firings that week. Ken looked at salaries versus ratings. Y'know, if you didn't like Pat Gray no one was forcing you to listen. A lot of us did listen, and now that he's on KSEV, that's where the listenership is going.

On a general note, Michael Berry is a nice guy, but he's just not that entertaining. Michael Garfield, though, is excruciatingly boring. A few hours of tech talk on the weekend is fine, but five days a week has made me remove 950 from my channel selector. Sorry Ken Charles, Arbitron is going to look mighty bad for 950 next quarter.

KPRC used to be the station to listen to in the morning. Glen was awsome. I loved Pat except for the days Ken repeatedly called in to the show. At that point I changed the station to KTRH. Now with Pat on KTRH I get a much better signal and life is good. I hope Glen can find his way to KTRH. As for Ken, Michael, and KPRC, they need to just go away.

Can't believe what has happened to kprc- first Glenn and then Pat. The numbers will not be there with the audience you are now trying to reach. The pair you have now in the mornings are vulgar. Intelligent comments are absent.
It's been established that the liberal audience isn't there for new talk radio shows and guess what... you won't "sneak up" on them either by transforming existing audiences.
